Cam/timing belt & 80k service

Featured Replies

The time has come for my '98 Mk1's 1.9 TDI fixed interval 80k service. So I've been asking for a few quotes including getting the timing belt changed because it says in my service manual that it was last done at 40k and where it says how often it should be done, someone has crossed out 60k and put 40k. To my surprise I found that 2 dealers and Awesome Sarah all said I should have my belt done at 60k. What should I do? Get it changed now? or @ 100k?

I'm pretty sure it should be done @ 60k.

Ok sound, but why would a skoda dealership change the frequency written in the book? and what happens if i don't change it now and it breaks? What would you do? (other than change it yourself? )

Probably because they either werent sure or wanted the money for doing it.

If it were mine id get it done tbh.

Hi Jimbo

I have just replied to the PM you sent me.

In fact Lummox yoou should be able to help?

I was lead to believe that they was replaced at 40k but superceeded parts then made it 60,000 between replacement , so this means it would be required for the 100k?

Is this right?

Sarah

If you have no history detailing that the cambelt has been changed, I would change it now to be on the safe side.

So is there a way of telling whether my current belt is a 40k belt or a 60k belt? i.e by when it was fitted?

Do you know what time it is and I have to think now ;)

Mmm the part number could determin this.

But I would not think that it would be visable on the belt now?

Or a recipt? Now that would be expecting a bit much wouldnt it?

But I would say as Skoda stopped doing the free service in November 2000 and it was in before then , I would say that it would be the 60k belt.

This is a dilema.

But I think if it came down to do I or dont I , I think I would

Sarah

If you are not sure, the only way to be sure is to change it. Peace of mind sometimes comes at a price. :)

My thoughts exactly.
