Overheating and Limp Mode

Featured Replies

Hi, tonight my 2014 Octavia VRS TDI estate overheated. I got a temperature warning alarm and the needle rose quickly to the red. I pulled over and checked the engine...all fluids fine, no leaks, fan running.

I also noticed I appeared to be in limp mode. No warning lights, just not revving above 2.5k.

I literally limped home by stopping every 2 miles to cool down. The needle was rising quickly.

I've seen from this site that the water pump is a common cause of overheating on these engines however I see no mention of the car going into limp mode also.

Can anyone confirm they've had a similar issue?

It's done 60k miles and of course is due in for its MOT Friday 🙄

I'm going to phone the independent garage tomorrow to postpone the MOT and see how soon they can get me in.

Just what I need at xmas.

Cheers

That's not limp mode.  When stationary the car will not rev over 2.5k.  There is a super special button combo to get it to rev over that for testing I think.  Sounds like you have the water pump issue.  At 60k I'd get the belt done at the same time.

as said there, if you've got the car in neutral and your foot off the clutch, it won't rev above 2.5k. Put it in gear and keep your foot on the clutch and it will rev higher.

As to limp home mode, what symbols (if any) came up on your dashboard?

Didn't know about the 2.5k limiter in neutral, will try it in gear tonight.

There is no dash warning lights at all, other than the overheating warning when the needle flys up.

Hope it's the water pump issue then and I'll get the timing belt done at the same time.

Going to a local garage tomorrow so fingers crossed.  Cheers.

When it goes into limp home road, the glow plug light flashes and will continue to flash for as long as you have the ignition on.

No glow plug light so assume not in limp mode however I tried putting it in gear and keeping foot on the clutch as you said but it still would only rev to 2.5k....

I'll test properly tomorrow when I take it the garage.
