petrol vrs in Australia with an annoying rattle

Featured Replies

Hi all, i have a 2013 vrs petrol occy. I've had it for 4/5 months now and love it. The dsg reviews made me sceptical but it's a dream to drive even though still untuned is has enough punch so far. The reason I'm writing is because at about 2/3000 rpms in 2 and then 3rd gear going roughly 30 and then 40 or so km/hr under light acceleration I hear a rattle, an annoying rattle. From a forum here in Australia I was told to check the wastegate actuator. So I removed the plastic guard, the axel shield and had a play with the actuator and it was on solid with no play so it cant be the case. Has anyone else had this problem and what was the fix? Another option was the heat shield and or rattle fuel line, but due to it happens under certain revs and speed it has to be something to do with resonation of the engine. also i use 98 octane fuel and have had the rattle fora while and use an octane boost on one tank of fuel and nothing has changed. the OCD in me is getting thoroughly annoyed with this hopefully harmless rattle. Any help id be greatly appreciative.  thanks in advance hope you all have a nice festive season. Ben

Don't know for sure, but check the heat shields on the cat and forward exhaust box.

ok thanks, you're a champion.

My guess would be heat shields too.

Can you get the car up on a four post lift with the engine running?

yes i could and when i do?

I reckon, from personal experience that there is a decent chance it is the Wastegate linkage.

Edit. Corrected phone auto corrects!

I will take a guess here but in his OP he has already checked that and found it to be ok.

You don't need to guess because he said he did!

yeah i already tried and tested the wastegate, so the search for the noise continues.

How did you test it exactly? Your symptoms sound exactly like what my Wastegate rattle sounded like. And I  could not feel any movement. For the sake of the price of the clip I would start there.

i removed all the covers, i got needle nose pliers and reached up and tried to move it. it didn't move at all, was that like yours?

I tried to lever it side to side and couldn't detect anything from lieing underneath the car and probing.

Get someone to sit in the drivers seat and take it through the rev range in neutral whilst you're underneath listening.

The noise may only be audible inside the car at certain road and engine speeds and only noticeable in certain gears, but you will probably find the that from underneath the noise will be much more apparant.

so i finally got under the car and put the waste gate actuator clip on. after a test drive i could still hear the annoying rattle. what a nightmare the trouble shooting continues.  any ideas?

I'm surprised that hasn't improved it to be honest.  Can you make a recording of the noise?  Have you checked the usual suspects with the undercover tray removed,  or even better on a ramp - e.g. heatshields, driveshaft shields, loose suspension drop bars etc. etc.  Even the plastic undertray can resonate if it is not properly inserted to the tabs and screwed on all mountings.....

Maybe get the car on a ramp or on stands and get someone to rev the car to see if you can induce the noise and pinpoint.  Care and precautions required with engine running and vehicle on stands.
