Rough idle at startup

Featured Replies

2015 1.6 diesel DSG, 30k. It's running rough at first start up in the mornings. It's done it ever since the weather got colder but some days its worse than others - it's worse after it has been left standing for a couple of days rather than used every day. Today it sounded like a rattling bag of spanners and pulling away was quite rough including jerky gear changes. Usually after a minute or two, it settles down but today it took maybe 3-4 mins to settle down. But once it did, it ran nice and smoothly whether at idle or speed.

I have seen other posts saying this is normal for the diesel. Is it?

I've scanned it with Obdeleven and quite surprisingly, there isn't a single fault!

thanks

My CR 1.6 and 2.0 have both been quiet. Diesel knock and noise when cold especially in older systems  was a trademark but modern diesels are quite refined. You could be looking at a dicky injector or possible rattling vacuum pump. Get a second opinion

I assume a dodgy glow plug or injector would throw an error code for odbeleven to see?

Turned out it was dodgy fuel. I threw some injector cleaner in the tank and as it ran down I filled up with Shell Vpower and its been absolutely fine since. Not sure where I got my dodgy fuel, but 9 times out of 10 I fill up at the local BP garage in Ivybridge or Tesco at Lee Mill. So it has to have been one of those...

Anyway, if anyone else ever gets rough idle at startup, try the fuel before you start to worry too much :)
