1.8 L&K issues offered a 1.4 SE alternative

Featured Replies

Hi all, a month or so back I bought a MY11 L&K with 80K and Service history (although it transpired not full) and was very happy with it for a week or 2, until I came to fill up with fuel and found the oil light illuminate as well. Checked the dipstick and it was below the minimum level, so I bought some oil and chucked 800ml or so in. Checked again a few days later and it had dropped again. Dealer was very good about it, took it into the garage and did a measured oil fill, I then drove it for about 2 weeks over Xmas.
went back to the garage again to discover it had consumed 1L in 180 miles.

dealer has offered the following:

1. refund

2. possible repair/replacement engine, however I worry about possible damage to the Cat and anything else that may have happened as a result. Also the clutch seems a bit bad to me too, I’ve repeatedly stalled when pulling away which I’ve never done before when driving, but not sure if this could be related to oil consumption.

3. replacement with a MY10 1.4 SE but with 54k and FSH

I’ll take a drive in the 1.4 SE in the next few days but I wonder if I will miss the Luxuries of the L&K and the power of the 1.8 or whether I’d not really notice after a week or so? I previously had a 1.9 tdi 54 plate fabia vrs.

obviously I can not fault the dealer at all at this point as they have been exceptionally good.

I just wondered what input other people may have? Really just for a chat.

At the minute I’m thinking of taking the SE as a replacement as I can’t be without a car for work and don’t really want to spend the time hunting for another vehicle and at least I know the dealer is decent and keeps to his word.

I would take the refund and find a 1.4 tsi elegance spec one instead (especially if you are use to the spec of a L&K)

The EA111 1.4tsi could have cam chain issues on a 2010 - was modified around 2012.                 I'd get a refund

Brilliant thanks guys, I’ll try for that option then

The SE was too much of a step down for the same money for me, and the EML came on whilst driving, not a great start.

I also have the option of a 14 plate fabia estate 1.2 SE  (if I add a bit to the buy price) with 45k or an 09 civic 1.8 with 97k (plus a partial refund)

I’ll try to arrange a drive in both, I know the civic vtec engines are bulletproof, but I also know, as we have a roomster that I can drive the fabia comfortably enough.

Does anyone know of anything to look for on the 1.2 Fabia 105bhp, I appreciate it is the Octavia forum not the Fabia one 😉

Just spoken to the dealer again, he now has a 1.8 tsi dsg estate, possibly elegance, but I’m not sure till tomorrow. 80k miles

Having never really driven auto, what do I look out for? Are dsg gearboxes alright, any known issues. Also what is the best way to identify a possible oil fault on the 1.8 having been stung once with the L&K, I don’t really want to have the same thing again with the oil consumption. Is it really just a case of looking for signs of excessive smoke on the exhaust?

alternative is a 14 plate 1.2 Fabia SE, or a refund (although he is being a little stubborn on the refund, I’m legally entitled to one so I don’t care how stubborn he is. I’d just prefer the easiest solution)

Are you mad!? You have the infamous 1.8 TSI issue where almost every single one drinks oil for fun, and you're considering another?

Have you seen this sticky thread right at the top of the page?

Bite the dealer's hand-off and do whatever you can to get rid of the 1.8 TSI ASAP.

Take option 3, the 1.4 TSI is a brilliant engine.

1.8 tdsg box will be a 7 speed dry clutch box so not as reliable as the 6 speed wet clutch ones, so best to avoid as it adds to additional things that can go wrong especially if you didn't need an auto in the first place.

Push for a refund as he sold you a dud and a Fabia was not what  you were originally after.

Sounds like he has a good source of oil drinkers, make sure that you are not the outlet!
