Octavia mk3 torsion beam to irs swap possible??

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have been on a lookout for a used Octavia 2013+. Here in India we only get 2 models:

1) 1.8t petrol tsi with dq200 dsg and irs suspension.

2) 2.0 tdi with dq250 dsg and torsion beam suspension.

I am more inclined towards the tdi as i can have further performance mods using remaps + turbo upgrades without the dsg being a limitation.

As both cars are on the mqb architecture. So, would it be possible to swap the irs from tsi to the tdi without having major changes? It is a direct bolt on type of thing?

The TDI doesn’t remap well, even after spending a mega fortune it won’t get you more than 280 bhp and you could get more than that from a TSI. Finding someone who can help you swap the 1.8 to the DQ250 could be the better option.

No. You'd have to change the rear floor and all the suspension pickups, and I suspect the front springs and dampers...

I am currently targeting only 250 bhp as the TDI will not have a LSD to keep the traction in check as the VRS already has a e-diff which the indian version does not get.

But seems like IRS swap is a major work.

IRS swap is major work, but is possible - not that it makes much sense, as it will cost probably more then fuel you'll save with TDI.

e-diff is nice thing, but if you are really up to having a LSD, there are many aftermarket options, even there are shops which convert this basic differential to LSD one.

My suggestion is to go for TSI, as this car comparing to a "civillian" TDI gives an impression of a higher car segment. Less noise, vibrations, more refined acceleration, more comfortable, especially in the back seats.

I am not Keen on doing IRS Swap if it includes welding and aligning body parts as there is a probability that things can go wrong. I would only be interested if it was a bolt on swap. So, it has lesser room for errors.

Also, the thing keeping me away from the TSI is the DQ200's reliability. since, i will be remapping for sure. Not sure how much abuse the DQ200 can handle.

The other option i have is a mk6 jetta TDI 2015 which already comes with a IRS and the DQ250. but then it's based upon the older PQ35 platform and has the older ea189 2.0 TDI.
So, i won't be able to add other things such as the virtual cockpit, MIB2 and also misses the sunroof.

@radiomaniack your suggestions would be welcome here. i heard you were planning to do something of this kind too.

Unfortunatly torsion beam to IRS in your case is a no go on the MK3, MK3 is MQB platform but here in the U.K only VRS and 4x4 scout models received the IRS, all other models make do with torsion beam rear suspension, it really is not easy D.I.Y as the upper and lower link pick points are not there and require very careful measuring, fabricating and welding into place, the only suspension mount points that are there are for the radius arms as the torsion beam uses the same locating point. Even the lower powered MK7 golf uses torsion beam rear suspension.

@Amarcool: Thanks a lot, but I don't have enough time for the moment to post details. Maybe after...

First step, I found this for aprox. 700 euros in Germany:ghukiyk.thumb.jpg.989a7558d431fde28b2e1d58aa8e7293.jpg

Here we go again!!

I recently looked in detail for another poster about this swap, & the MK3 Octavia has different bodywork where the rear wheel arches join the cross member for the boot floor, basically there are different bodies for the rear suspension,

The Mk7 Golf however the body is the same, so the swap can be done on that car....however the IRS is available on lower spec cars on the Mk7 Golf...

Even though the Mk7 Golf & Mk3 Octavia are the same MQB platform, VAG decided it will make & sell more Mk3 Octavia with torsion beam rear suspension, so it makes the cheaper body, without the 4 expensive special rivet nut panels for the rear subframe.

*******************************

Quotes from previous posts:-

Nope...only the main "trailing arm" (Item No.2) hangs from the body... those other suspension items hang from the rear subframe....& that only requires 4 bolt holes....

Items No. 12, 13, 23 have different versions...

PR codes

"0N1" for torsion beam.

"0N4" for multilink...

I've double checked the MK7 Golf estate (my car) & it does not have different items..so the Mk7 Golf with its MQB (the same platform as MK3 Octavia)...will take the swap...& the Octavia won't!!...

**************************

The "cut-off" point is different.....

MK3 Octavia which got the multilink rear:- VRS, L&K, & all AWD versions….

MK7 Golf which got the multilink rear:- ALL cars with 122PS & over......so even a lowly 1.4lt in basic "S" spec got it......my 1.4lt 140PS GT MK7 Golf estate got it...& yet the same engine in the MK3 Octavia didn't get it!

*************************************

Get the 1.8Lt with irs...many in the USA tune the 1.8lt to 300bhp easy.....just swap the turbo from a Mk7 Golf GTI, & downpipe & remap.....& in your case swap out the DSG for a better one....

OK i understood that getting IRS is a no go. What about the DSG Swap to DQ250. Is that a easy one ? Any leads for that?

Just a quick google brings up this:-

https://www.google.co.uk/search?ei=NTsgXr_sGeK68gKL4r2ICA&q=swapping+the+dsg+on+a++mk7+giolf&oq=swapping+the+dsg+on+a++mk7+giolf&gs_l=psy-ab.3...8338.12207..13259...0.2..0.98.1389.17......0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j33i10.CZYZXhcckhk&ved=0ahUKEwj_2s_79IfnAhVinVwKHQtxD4EQ4dUDCAo&uact=5

people swapping the DSG in a GTI for a manual & others swapping the DSGs for stronger ones.....You will require coding & VCDS whatever gearbox you decide to swap...

As stated. a gearbox swap looks to the be the 'easiest' solution.  Just bear in mind the final drive if taking from a tdi as it will be lower/higher depending which way you go.  Fit a tdi box to a tsi and you will end up with taller gearing which will hamper acceleration but offer a higher top speed.  Add you that the dq250 has one fewer gear so will likely have a wider spread maybe one of the box's from the higher power models would be a better choice.  DQ380/500?
