Water in headlight

Featured Replies

evening all

After all this torrential rain we've had I've had some moisture in one of my headlights. I've managed to dry most of it out by removing the headlight unit and keeping it in a warm room for a few hours. However, now I can see water marks on the inside.

Does anyone know if there's a way of getting inside to clean it or is it a completely sealed unit (which I'd expect)?

Thanks

I think your best bet would be to carefully remove all access panel covers and bulbs and you may be able to get a small cut soft cloth in there and may be able to manoeuvre it with a blunt thin implement. You have to be able to get the cloth back out. Otherwise you may need a new unit if it is prone to fogging up.

I have the same problem.

Can't see a way through past the bulbs to wipe up though.

Going to try a hair dryer.....

Hair drying in progress :)  Appears to be clearing up.

On lowest heat setting, so isn't heating at all really, just getting some air flow through small hole and then flows out the bigger hole.

To clear the water streaks (mine are not too bad), I'd probably remove the following 4 bolts and then you should have access to the plastic inside:

When this happened to me on my old car I simply removed the high beam bulb (as it's in a reflector lens so leaves a hole into the main housing once it's out), and blew warm air from a heat gun on lowest setting for about 5 minutes. Completely dried it out.

Mine are like that not as bad just at the base.. but its all well and good removing it, but what are you doing to stop it happening again/ why / how is it getting in there?

It's condensation, water that gets into the headlamp unit probably through a perished seal. It condenses on the plastic lens as this is the coldest surface. Check all the seals around the lamp unit and make sure all the rear caps etc are present

I may stick mine in the oven, and get the seals warmed up

Hi all

Thanks for the replies. I have managed to dry mine using a hairdryer. I have discovered that the small rubber dust cover was missing so I do need to a get a replacement. I'm going to try and remove the bulbs and try a microfibre cloth on the end of a stick to try to remove the water stains from the inside ,probably not worth doing this until I have replacement cover though).
