OK then I guess I'll drag my sheltered arse to India, tomorrow. See you in a couple of weeks.

Redboy, you comment shows the world we live in where people create their own conclusions of what people say in order to be post contrary remarks towards them.

Nowhere did I say that I did not find the attack disturbing nor compare it to the alleged data harvesting, I do not have an issue aside from people asserting that I may have something to hide.

The vehicle (I presume a LR product) was not stolen, it like presumably many others was routinely sending location data to LR, now I have no problem with the Police using that data to help them with their enquiries but how many owners know that this is happening?

If they were to track the accused by his mobile phone seeing what cells it connected to as it moved or using the GPS data if a smartphone and location turned on that I could understand, I was disturbed by the matter of fact way that it was reported and the impression it gave that as soon as you drive your car the data would be uploaded to the manufacturer, that to me is a gross intrusion of privacy, I am not ready to accept 1984.

I am hoping that it was false news a deliberate misinformation to hide where they really got their intelligence from.

I am not trying to attack you. It's a simple fact that many manufacturers' cars send data back to the factory. The police will be aware of this and try to access it to solve crimes.  My Golf does this along with any other vehicle that can summon assistance from the roadside. I know that some lorries engines are automatically remapped/boosted when their GPS informs the factory that they're in mountainous terrain. We are already living in the world envisioned in 1984.

I did not use the word attack.

I believe, hope more like, that whilst your vehicle knows where it is from its satnav it is not actively/routinely sending that data to the manufacturer but would do so if you summon assistance, they would not only need your permission to recieve and save this data but that of any other driver. Pretty sure that is the legal position which is why I was concerned about the claims made in the news report,  dont believe its what they said, there is either more to it or its a deliberate red herring.

A vehicle ECU does not need to send GPS data to the manufacturer for them in turn to change the vehicle map according to its elevation, its taken care of by the atmospheric and MAP sensors and the fuelling and ignition is adjusted according to the look up tables contained within, has been like that for 30 years.
