Add led signal light to electric heated wingmirror

Featured Replies

For the life of me cannot get any information on how to add an led to my wing mirrors. Do I create connection to existing indicator in the wing or is there an easier option ?

that sounds complicated. What sort of light, and how will you attach it to the wing mirror?

Indicators run on resistance hence why when a bulb goes they flicker faster. So adding more bulbs could cause the flashing to slow down and not be legal. look into how indicators work and you will see what I mean :)

That may have been true up to the late 80's on the last few remaining vehicles with bi-metallic strip flasher units but its 40 years out of date since they used solid state electronics.

Some of the electronic units did have a function to deliberately flash the idiot light faster when a bulb had failed but adding a low current (compared to a filament bulb) LED to a flasher circuit will be an insignificant load and not affect the flash rate.

To the OP, wire it in parallel with either the wing repeaters or the output terminal of the flasher unit or bulb control module whatever is the easiest cable run, circuit wise there is no difference.

A lot of work though for what return? Your indicators are already visible from the side with the side repeater on the wing and these are a lot more visible than the tiny things integrated into door mirrors.

Bother, I originally read this thread as someone wanting to fit an LED to the mirror switch to show when the mirror glass heater was on.  My 1991 VX Cav GSI 4X4 had one of them and I liked it, my next car, a 2000 VW Passat 4Motion did not have that LED and I trashed the first set of heated mirror glasses!

Surely (Don't call me Shirley) That will be similar? Wire in to the heaters contacts, a small LED that you can see glowing inside the miror or something!

Yes but not quite the OP's topic.

Edit:- or was it?
