and replace if necessary...

Thanks AG Falco

have been told by the tuning shop not much gain 0 to 3-5 max bhp on a MK3, panel filter style only only worth doing if your re-mapping at same time

It frees up air flow to turbo, hence quicker spool time and reaction.

Hhp increase maybe in topend of rpm, since it is geting appropriate airflow.

These are my findings with my car.

On the long run its cheaper too, with proper maintanence.

@krigl  which brand of performance filter are you recommending for the op,s 1.0tsi.    With proper maintenance I take it you mean cleaning because an expensive dirty one might give less performance than an oem standard one.  We have all been there, more noise, higher fuel consumption no extra bhp...

I strictly use K&N in all my engines, cars, motor bikes, 4wheelers, 2stroke or 4stroke engine type.
I use, if applicable, a panel filter that goes in the OEM filter housing.

Proper maintenance includes cleaning and oiling every 2nd engine oil service. I have no problems with dust, since we do not live in the Sahara, for other stuff these sport filters are enough dense to filter stuff with no damaging affect to engine valves, pistons and cylinders.

The noise part is not my concern, since the OEM filter housing limits the noise. Fuel consumption does not go up, but down, at least in my case it is true. I have also a polo 1.4 16V NA engine and the filter helped knock off 0.5l/100km on consumption. Instead of 6.0l/100km like in the beginning without the k&n  I am still getting 5.5l/100km until this day after 200kkm driven with the car. The same route as 9years ago. I have no other modifications on that car.

And in that 9 years of only cleaning it I have saved a bunch of money and the environment also, by not using disposable filters, which, lets be fair, are not completely degradable.

I have used K&N, s for lots of years on offroaders,  cleaned them properly.  Too many mess up cleaning and treating them.  Police mechanics use once and chuck them.  Never had any improved performance or economy with them. But good for use with snorkels or just when there might be water getting to the air intake.

I just use dishwashing soap and hot water in a canister to soak for a little, then rinse it up in the shower with hot water. Blow it a little with pressured air from distance and put it to dry either on sun or on heater on home. Spray some oil on and throw it back in. A sunday job twice a year. No mess with dedicated canister for soaking.
