Engine Rattle 2011 Octavia VRS Petrol

Featured Replies

Hey guys, new to the forum.

We have a 2011 Octavia VRS petrol and yesterday the engine made a rattling noise and now the engine management and epc lights have come on. My wife is driving it and said it jerked forward too.

Its done 63k.

Its going to a specialist on Friday but wanted to hear people’s thoughts on what it could be and what it might cost.

video below - help please!

Unfortunately it sounds like the dreaded tensioner failure which has wrecked so many engines on this model.

@Redboy bloody hell, is it something that can be repaired?

Yes but it is expensive if that is the fault. The camchain can slip a tooth and this can cause  damage to the head.

Go to the fixed thread 1.8 & 2.0 TSI engine failures at the top of the Octavia MkII forum for more info

My previous car was the same model and year as yours. If you are lucky and no damage has occurred, new chains and tensioner fitted by a good independent garage should be around £600. I had it all done at 50k miles just in case the tensioner failed, as it is a fairly common problem on the earlier TSI engines. Good luck with the repair mate.
