1.4 TSI RS Problem Code p2188

Featured Replies

Hey, yesterday I started the car and I found it has DCT Problem code 2188, the dash does not light the engine on dashboard. Everything seems to be ok from my perspective ( I don’t know cars much ), anyone had this problem ?

hello according to google:

OBD II fault code P2188 is a generic code that is defined as “System Too Rich at Idle Bank 1”, and is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects too much fuel relative to air in the air/fuel mixture when the engine is idling.

What should I do to fix this ? It’s not even on dash yet.

Is car fully serviced ie oil filters, air filters, fuel filter etc.

Have you put in 98 ron minimum (super). can you clear the code see if it re-appears?

Oil filter was changed recently, I haven’t cleaned air filter in while and fuel I think never.

i only put 100 octane gasoline in the car ( we don’t have 98 here in Czech Republic.

Is the performance of the car affected in any way or fuel consumption gone up?

The performance was the same so was the fuel consumption. I was using this thing in winter to get the engine warmer and after i removed it, the problem is gone. One more thing, from time to time, i loose some amount of water coolant, any experience with this ?dsc_0013-199711-1000-1000-0-0.jpg

You might be needing a new waterpump and 2 belts.

 ?

How old is your car and how many km covered?

& Blocking the Air Intake was not 'Simply Clever'.

It's from 2010 and about 98 000 kms on it. The ''problem'' with the P2188  was solved with removing the winter plastic thing.

If it has the original water pump and magnetic supercharger clutch a new one might be the solution to the coolant loss.  Unless it is somewhere else.

I will bump the thread.

Well, the water pump wasnt done, even when servise was replacing the timing chain, they said the pump seems to be still ok.

That is how they are, OK until they are not OK.

There can not be that many 10 year old ones not going to be needing a new water pump, and the belts replaced even though they look OK as well.

You can pick up a water pump for £60 these days, a third of what they used to cost.

Sounds to me you found your answer after removing the cover...

It was most likely blocking the airflow too much for your car and probably more suited to a diesel variant. If you want, you could post it to me and I will try it out on my car, to see if it runs well or causes an issue.

I used it last year for whole winter, without any problem. I thank you all for your helps. Any other “problems” what I should look after in future ?

They just need good oil (not long life) filters. plugs and fuel, and some nice cool air and they are happy.

Let them get the oil up to heat and then be sure they get booted regularly to keep the plugs clean.

What about engine oil ? My service used to fill it with 10W-40 ( refill one liter per 1 000 km) but now they have me 10W-60, to ease the oil consumption.

Nope Nope nope! Whoever was servicing your car has been using the wrong oil.

Only use 5w40 or 5w30!

You have an oil consumption problem. Rather than bodging the job with heavy oil, get someone trustworthy (so not the garage you normally use for service IMO) to do a dry and wet compression test, then see where you go from there depending on the results.
