First gear will not disengage

Featured Replies

On my Superb II (TSI 1.8 Petrol, 2008 60000km), the gear-lever is sticking in first gear, nearly always after coming to a stop.
To disengage it I switch off the motor then pull it hardish and wiggle it and it releases.
If the car is moving and I'm changing up to second, it disengages fine.
When the lever is stuck, it seems there's something retaining it on the right side of the lever.
The clutch pedal bites after one inch of pressure and there's plenty of fluid in the reservoir.

The clutch is the original one.

Anyone had this kind of trouble?
I'd be most grateful for any pointers as to possible causes.

A clutch drag issue usually shows up as difficulty engaging a gear , not disengaging.  Has any work been done on the car that might have disturbed engine/gearbox mounts and linkages? If not - it might be worth seeing if any mounts are worn (especially dogbone / gearbox top mounts)

No work has been done on the car. Since my post, I've found that pumping the clutch about three inches two or three times releases the gear. How full should the reservoir be? The little plate is covered only just.

Check under the gearbox bellhousing - any drips of brake/clutch fluid? I think the 1.8tsi has a concentric clutch slave cylnder (inside gearbox) which can fail.

Worth checking if it has an external cylinder  though (these are reliable) - if it has it will be on the top of the gearbox (follow the hydraulic pipes!)
