Hi everybody,

So my problem is an interesting one. Under normal circumstances my clutch operates fine. Fluid levels don´t change. But, if I apply just a slight amount of pressue to the clutch pedal, it starts to go to the floor and doesn´t engage the clutch. If I let the pedal return and put a normal amount of pressure on the pedal, it works fine. Any ideas? It´s a 2020 scala 1.0 tsi evo petrol motor and has 108k klm on the clock.

@cbakon If you press the clutch to the floor and hold the pedal down then select first gear, does the clutch rise and the car start to move off?

You can´t put the car into gear. You have to take your foot off, the pedal returns and then if you push the pedal at a normal rate, you can select a gear and it takes off. I´m wondering if oil leaks past the seal of the master cylinder when slightly pushing it down but when you push down normally, it doesn´t go past the seal. I was wondering if it might have been some safety measure to stop people who like to ride their clutch.

Pretty sure that type of pedal action will not be by design. Probably a piston cup seal letting by - what happens if you hold down the clutch pedal for an extended period with the engine running in gear?

If the fluid level is ok then I reckon its either master or slave cylinder thats letting fluid past seals if pressing slowly. If the fuid level is dropping its a leak somewhere. When you press firmly theres enough pressure to operate clutch even with either a leak or bad seals. When pressing slowly theres not enough pressure. Check fluid and if its low then check for leaks.

This is indicative of a worn piston seal in either the master or slave cylinder. It does not have to result in a visible leak.

It will probably get worse with time. The fix is easy but messy and time consuming. Unless you can be sure which piston is misbehaving then both need to be looked at. A main dealer will probably advise changing the the master and slave cylinders which might be cheaper given what main dealer labour charges are. If you have a good indy dealer locally take it to them.
