Gear selection problem 1.9tdi BXE 5 speed

Featured Replies

2007 1.9tdi pre-FL Octy BXE 5 speed manual.

Has been stood for a while awaiting some repairs.  I can select all 5+reverse gears when standing or driving with a cold engine but as the engine warms up gear selection becomes more difficult and moves to impossible for some after a short motorway run.

I've sprayed the gear lever end of the gearchange cables with wd40/ptfe and that seems to loosen things up a little so I suspect the thermal stiffening problem is indicating the gearbox end of the cables where they sit below the motor.

Proposed approach is to repeat the wd40/ptfe spray on the cable ends and once freed (assuming this works) follow up with a dosing of spray grease.

Does this seem a reasonable approach?  Is there somewhere else I should be looking or another way to tackle the problem?

Had the same problem on my 240k 2005 BKC 1.9 with SMF. 5th gear I would miss or would need more than the usual shift. I never got around to any wd40 or anything. It just seemed to get better the more I drive it.(has long periods of standing around, as I have a Superb 2 as well)  I do about 200 miles round trip to the office a day. So maybe like me it’s the stood around problem.?Any lubrication can’t do any harm.

Isn’t there a write up about adjusting the linkage?

Its not clutch drag is it Mike?

If it wont engage any gears when hot have you tried stopping the engine then engaging the gears?
