Gearbox oil again

Featured Replies

Hopefully I will be changing my G/B oil in my 1999 Felicia I understand it holds 2.4 Lr I have changed it in March 2011 62,800 miles car has now got 95,500 miles no problems with G/B or car so I have don 32,700 Miles on this oil

1- Do I need to change oil - Edit just looked at my Haynes and it says 40,000 change G/B

2 - Will I need 2.4 or as some will be left in G/B after draining or Just 2L (I know but I am tight )

3- What make of oil I see prices can be anything from ok to expensive.

4- semi synthetic or full synthetic

Thanks for any help.

My test for the oil is the first gear test.
Put the car into 1st gear and go with the idle speed that first gear provides you.
Shift the car into neutral.
Depress the clucth again and try to engage first gear as the car is moving.
If you can do that easily then the oil is fine,if you cant  change the oil.
Because Birmingham gets kinda cold I would suggest the lower acceptable viscocity,
That being 75w-80.
MAIN POINT **IT HAS TO BE GL4 OIL** not gl5 not gl5/gl4 universal

Gl4+ is also acceptable
Best regards

Well, that makes sense, with the note that you also need an EP (Extreme Pressure) oil in a gearbox (since you don't have an M*n*).

@mikefelicia

Existing gearbox oil has lost its properties due to its age. You definitely have to change it.

Capacity: you'll need 3 bottles of 1 liter of oil. Oh, and a funnel, a hose, and patience.

Type of oil: 75W90 or 75W80 GL4 or GL4+ (it doesn't matter semi or full synthetic)

Example: MANNOL Basic Plus 75W-90 API GL 4+

The shifting mechanism inside gearbox of Felicia is designed ON PURPOSE to prevent shifting in 1st gear while the car is moving. I don't agree with your test.

The only recommended reason to change the gearbox oil is mileage and age (typically every 2 years).

Actually on both my fellys even when totally stopped it was hard to engage first gear if you didn't keep the clutch depressed for 5 seconds at least.

Once oil was changed even the test above was easy.

So the synchros are the ones responsible and for me that test has proven more than an adequate way to gauge oil quality and viscosity.

My 2 cents

What mileage have your Felicias?

The white one which i sold a month ago had 118.000 km but sadly it had been beaten by gl5 oil.
The black one has 120.000 on the clock and the fluid change was done at 119.000.

They are low mileage. My opinion is the clutch mechanism is mainly at fault. The fact that fresh oil overcomes the shifting in 1st gear issue is a red herring.

The white one had a brand new luk set Inc the cable adjusted by me.

it would start to engage middle way as I wanted.

Black one still has oem clutch propably on its last 10.000 to 20 km

It is adjusted so loose to the point that the pedal stops coming up and starts going down again. And still the engament occurs within the last 5 cm of travel so it actually disengages very properly.

I changed the oil and what a difference it has made the gear **** so easy now, I could only drain out two liters so two went back in I used a  Oil-Suction-Vacuum-Transfer-Syringe-Gun-Pump-Extractor-Gearbox (off Ebay) and it made the job so easy to do around 30 min to do the job.

Ok I have said it before and I know I am preaching to the converted but the Skoda Felicia has to be even in the 21 st century on of the best all around cars one of my neighbors has just purchased a second hand Fabia 3 years old and he asked me what I thought of it well between you and me I would not swop it for mine it seemed so cheaply made the plastic parts seem half the thickness of mine and was smaller inside.

I know first hand that Czechs from Skoda tried many times to convince VW to let them build a new Felicia in house.

VW refused because they fear Felicia will outsell the Polo's and the Golf's...

My final thoughts on the Felicia (well mine any way) when I purchased the car new 21 years ago I was working and many of my work mates said what do you want to buy one of them rubbish, well most have changed there cars several time and you know the saying he who laughs last laughs the longest.

Skoda never had a good reputation in the UK it was always a music hall joke, just like Honda motorcycles in the early 60s ( I still have my CB77) no one laughing at Honda now and we do not have a motorcycle industry or car we can call our own here in UK ok don't say Triumph some are made in Taiwan.
