any truth to the rumours ? Audi’s 2.5 5-cylinder warbler would be a dream replacement

Where'd you hear the rumour?

Both the linked articles say that the Kodiaq vRS’s engine is to disappear from the Kodiaq (AND all its VAG cousins) in the summer (week 25 says one), because of the poor CO2 figure of 167 g/100km. This figure weighs too heavily when the company is required to achieve a figure of 95g across its manufactured fleet.

The 2.5 5-cylinder Audi engine will surely be noticeably cleaner in the much smaller A3 sportback body, but even there (in the RS3) it scores 158g in 300ps form - and a frightening 214-215g in the 400ps form.  I don't think they’ll be making that change!

The articles also suggest the vRS will get the same set-up as the SEAT Tarraco FR PHEV plug-in hybrid, the Tarraco's most sporty model.

A 1.4 litre TSI 110 kW petrol engine, 85 kW electric motor and a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack offer up a total output of 245PS (180kW)/400Nm (4 more than the current diesel vRS), giving the plug-in hybrid Tarraco a top speed of 217km/h / 135mph and the ability to reach 100km/h / 60mph in 7.4 seconds. But importantly, CO2 emissions will be below 50g/km on the official WLTP test cycle.
