Broadband Disconnecting?.

Featured Replies

My Broadband connection keeps on disconnecting for no apparant reason. Today it seems to be happening more regularly than ever, about every five minutes or so. I am also fing it harder to connect when switching on, any idea's from you computer boffin's?.

Have you plugged anyhting else into the phone line recently Steve? Could possibly be a micro filter breaking down. I used to have trouble with the Sky box causing interferance too.

Sorted.

I had been making some changes to my E-mail and checked the "Disconnect after Send/Receive" by mistake  .

If you are using a USB broadband modem, it could be Outlook Express that is causing it. Look in the Options of OE for an option that says "hang up after send/receive complete" I bet it is ticked! Untick it and it should be sorted :)

If it is already unticked, then I dunno.

EDIT: He sorted it as I was posting :D

Thanks for your reply though, most appreciated

I'd always recommend using an ADSL router (= router + ADSL modem integrated) and using a wired or wireless connection. Generally more stable too.

That said USB can work fine with a single machine :) & glad you're sorted

USB in my experience is a disaster. Send something to the printer and bang the broadband drops out. Use the scanner and bang the braodband drops out

A lot depends on chipset, driver quality and OS.

That said a NIC is written for a single purpose and should do it well, they're cheap (a fiver will get you a reasonable chip on it) and it won't have any weird OS-dependant funny behaviour going on.

Old VIA chipsets used to be a bl*dy nightmare with USB and I've avoided them ever since for that purpose. New ones are fine though.

Best move I ever made getting a router and modem. Seemed to speed things up a little.

never experienced a problem with my usb modem when using any other usb devices ,although it did disconnect intermittantly when broadband first installed seems ok now:thumbup:
