1.6tdi rough cold running

Featured Replies

My 17 plate is having issues.

starts and idles fine but whilst cold runs extremely rough sort of spluttering and seems more noisy.

once warm it runs fine but again seems noisier as it’s accelerating also mpg is down by about 10mpg.

any ideas before I book it in? No warning lights have come on.

many thanks

When was it last getting 10 mpg more than it is now?

?

How many miles has the car done and when was the Air Filter last checked or replaced and has the Fuel Filter been replaced?

EDIT.

I see over 70,000 miles and DSG.

?

Has there been a change of tyres over the winter?

You may be on to something regarding the service no service book as it must be digital.

The car counting down to a service just now so that is due, I’ve found a couple of maintenance lists in the book pack and it looks like the last service was 28/8/18 but the mileage then was 36413 it’s now on 62000 can’t see anything being done in between.

the list don’t seem to indicate if the air/fuel has been changed only mentions the oil.

The tyres haven’t been changed.

The MPG drop was noticeable not long after the rough cold running started.

Guessing a full service is in order to see if that makes a difference the car is used for private hire but it’s only done a few thousand so far with that. I was thinking it was something to do with not getting a decent run but it’s had a few of these in the last week with no difference.

The longer runs do not mean that the car is not doing a few regens during the use of each tankfuls of fuel bring down the range from a tankful.

The colder weather might well have the car doing more regens.

Best look at that Air Filter to see that that is not dirty and costing you money.

The Fuel Filter was due a change before 70,000 miles by the Manufacturers Guidelines.

Thanks for that.

The regens seem to be normal I think I always make sure they complete each time.

will organise a new air/fuel and see if there’s any change fingers crossed it’s that simple.

Funnily enough, my 1.6TDi is sounding noisier more recently and doing a few more regents, despite my driving routine not changing. The car is booked in for a service in the middle of Match, going to by around 37500 miles by the time it goes in.

Its almost like the car start to behave differently when a service is due. Also the car feels different when it’s had a thorough clean!

Or am I imagining it?

A little update..

new air filter fitted but still appears the same. Hopefully change the fuel filter later today or tomorrow wanted to do separate to see if any made a difference.

Cars been driving in city all day average mpg is 35 usually its nearer 45.

paid a bit more attention to the cold start, whilst it’s cold it feels there no throttle response there is a slight judder when pressing the throttle pulling away around the 1.5-2k revs. I would liken it to a petrol engine pinking.

Changed the fuel filter last night, old one looked pretty dirty(as was the air filter that I changed the previous day) interestingly the mpg was up a bit today to 40.

Cars in early next week at a specialist maybe the oil change will make a difference as it’s been in for a lot of miles.

Still  got the poor running whilst it’s cold and still noisy above idle as it accelerates could a faulty egr valve be the issue?

My bet would be the glowplugs. If they are not heating up properly you wont get the correct combustion until it is warmed up. My  car has faulted my glowplugs with a cel on the dash. The car runs slightly rough at cold but my mpgs have also dropped.

Did think about glow plugs but the car fires up and idles fine(the light goes out quick also) would they throw up a warning light? Car hasn’t any showing.

Sometimes it might and sometimes it wont.

Mine did but I think one has very high resistance and is being changed next week weather dependent.

EML on now.

its in Wednesday spoke briefly to the garage yesterday they reckon EGR valve or injector.

Anyone know what the warranty situation is if the car is used as a private hire?

ooohhh - I think they Skoda may have a get-out-of-jail card on this one.  It all depends on whether you purchased the car as a 'fleet' vehicle or as a 'personal' vehicle.  If the vehicle has been regularly serviced by a authorised Skoda dealer, you could ask the dealer to put in for a claim against the vehicle as a good-will gesture.  I am assuming as you are in Tranent, you take your vehicle to West End Skoda in Edinburgh??

Thanks

I’m in Edinburgh now but that’s where it will go.

i might be ok car is under 3 year old but over 60k so think I’m ruled out of the standard warranty. But it’s still under an approved used warranty so should be able to de-taxi it 🙂

getting a specialist to diagnose it first EML has gone out again but no improvement in symptoms.

I'm assuming you have tried Autohaus in Loanhead.  https://autohausedinburgh.co.uk/

They seemed to be very clued in; I'm going to take my Scout to them to be serviced once the 20k service is performed.

This may not help, but don't rule it out.

Recently I've had the exact same problems you describe. Very rough running from cold, like it was on 3 cylinders. After a few minutes it would then run ok and be absolutely fine for the rest of the day. I posted here and people suggested glow plugs amongst other things. I tested for faults with obdeleven and there wasn't anything (I know you threw a MIL light). But then something occured to me. It had been like this for a couple of weeks, but co-incedentally after I filled up at our local filling station. I checked my receipt and sure enough it matched. It was now on about a 1/4 of a tank, so I drove to a Shell garage and stuck a tank of Vpower in it and next day it started from cold perfectly and the problem has never occured again since.

So in my case, it was definately a batch of dodgy fuel. No idea if it was water or dirt or some other contamination and I suppose I should replace the fuel filter. But either way, it's gone and not come back.

I did complain to the company (a well known British Petroleum company) but they never got back to me.

That’s where it’s going on Wednesday.

Appreciate the reply don’t think it’s dodgy fuel(unless that’s broken something) I’ve put a few cleaners through the system over the last few tanks to see if that help I did think at first it was maybe some sort of blockage as I had similar with a van I own that a fuel treatment sorted.
