Keyless start/stop occasionally takes two presses

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone else has had this... occasionally, the first press of the start button ignores me. As in, no ignition, no attempted start (or sometimes stop), no warning/change on dash it just does nothing. I'm talking maybe 1 in 10-20 times it requires a second press. Not sure if i'm being too quick with it, or pressing it at an odd angle 🤔 Never had to press it more than twice or use more force etc. so doubting its the button itself. It's been doing it a while but not really thought about too much, then it did it to me twice over a bunch of shortish trips today.

Certainly come across a few Golfs with the same issue and it's been the button.

Thanks, sounds like another niggle on the list for the dealer. Did see some posts in the yeti forum saying they used contact cleaner on the button that sorted it temporarily... It's under extended warranty though so will ask them to check.

Be interested to hear if anyone else has had similar problems.

Can't say I've had any problems with it - check neutral, clutch in, press button, car starts straight away. Sounds like a problem with the button itself.

Just out of interest, does anyone know how to access/remove the button on the fabia? Seen on some marks the steering wheel needs removing and on others just the bottom trim for the steering column. Not really planning on doing myself now, but more curious for the future at this point if it managed to fail after 4 years!

The switch has several contacts (I think three). If one of the three doesn't agree with the others, the system thinks there's a problem and this could be what you are seeing. But there should be a fault code (DTC) stored to say as much. Do you have or know anyone with VCDS?

I don't, no. I did see the inside of the button on some youtube video, looked like 3-4 contacts with the same rubber dome remotes and cheapo keyboards use. I've "repaired" one of my logitech harmony remotes a few times as after 2-3 years the contacts began to be less responsive. Some contact cleaner sorted them right out even though they appeared super clean already. Kinda crazy they rely on a similar design in a car, would of thought it would be something more industrial/reliable.

Looks like a new button is around £40, but fitting may require removing the steering wheel which is something I'd never do myself. I didn't grab that particular manual from erwin when I used it, if anyone has access it'd be great to know if it just requires the trim to be removed below the column or the whole wheel.

It does give me hope though that when I ask the dealer to take a look and it inevitably behaves itself they may be able to see some error codes to back it up rather than thinking i'm making it up.
