High oil consumption: change oil type?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been driving a Skoda Octavia 1.8 TSI petrol for almost 2 years now, bought it with 97K Km, now approaching 120K. The car has been very good and, for the first year, I never had to add a drop of oil (driven about 10K Kms). At some point though, it started using up a lot of oil, more than the 0.5 l/1000Km mentioned in the manual, more like 1L/1000Km. I have been filling it up with the recommended VW 504 00 type, as I am in flexible service regime.

When I asked the Skoda official garage, the guy said that before doing anything he should run a test to quantify the oil usage. I feel like I don't need to do that, as I can see that the car is using too much oil.

Another independent garage told me that the first thing to try would be a different type of oil, I think he said a thicker one. Now that I have finished my 5L tank, I am considering that option, can anybody here vouch for it?

Thanks,

G

Using VW 502 so 5w 40 FS oil might help a little and not leaving to variable service intervals but doing fixed interval oil and filter changes.

The thing is that if you have the common 1.8TSI Euro 5 issues as in the pinned thread at the top of the page you need to do more than change the oil used.

OK, thanks.

I have to say that just changing the filters did not help anything with oil consumption.

You mean this thread?

That is it.  Sadly it will be the cause of your excessive oil use.

An official Oil Consumption test is a waste of time as you said.  Known issues, known cause.

I don't have the time to go through all the comments right now, but that thread seems to relate to engine failures... do you mean that my engine is likely going to fail in the near future? I was hoping to drive many more thousands of KMs with it :)

Sadly yes.

Try the vw502.00 but as @Roottootemblowinootsoot says, it is a known issue. You maybe lucky and the change reduces consumption for a while.  I use mobil super 3000 x1 5W40, but others are available. That linked thread starts with a lot about timing chain tensioner failures, which may also be an issue for you if your car is pre 2012 and has never had the latest revision. But on your current issue in more recent pages you will see how common the oil usage issue is with the  1.8 Tsi Gen 2.

The design of the scraper rings is poor  (subject to revisions which requires pistons and conrods) and the variable service regime really doesn't and didn't do these engines any favours...

I brought a used 1.8 Tsi a few years ago and it had high oil useage from day one - i ended up handing the car back 6 weeks later after the garage had tried oil and filter changes etc - others were not so lucky and either were stuck with the car or it developed the issue during their ownership.

It’s poor piston ring design that’s the problem. Mine was sorted by the Skoda dealer under warranty new pistons, rods and timing chains and tensioner. No oil consumption problems since.

@Nuclear_Jules   Was this with an Extended Warranty or a Warranty with an Approved Used car, and how long ago?

Approved used from main Skoda dealer August 2018. Got it sorted within the 3 month warranty.

Good.

Skoda Approved used cars come with a 12 month warranty.

Try the vw502.00

Trying to order some of the above. I see very large variation in prices and I have no idea what/how to choose.

What would be a good oil brand/model for my Octavia 1.8 TSI, such that engine keeps running as long as possible?

For example, SHELL HELIX HX6 10W-40 is on the lower end of the price spectrum, while CASTROL Magnatec, A3/B4 10W-40 costs almost over 50% more. Both are VW502.00 (but also CVW 505.00 at the same time!).

Also, seems like Castrol oils 0W cost a bit less than the 10W ones. I drive in Switzerland and Italy, so not particularly cold climates (especially going forward now), maybe I am fine with a 0W oil?

I am quite a beginner, thanks a lot for your tips!

@Giff

Just 5w 40 FS

to VW 502 00.

(In the UK you can collect it in Super Markets like Asda or Tesco, Home Bargains, B&M etc, or a Motor Factors.

No need to spend more than £25 for 5 Litres in the UK, often less than that.)

Actually, another question:

When I change oil type from VW507.00 to VW502.00, should I also change the filter? It was changed about 8 months / 10K KM ago when I serviced the car (variable interval - I think it's time to change to fixed).

Thank you.

Actually I am pretty sure I need a new filter. Tips on what filter to buy?
