A prodigal driver returns

Featured Replies

Well after an absence of a year from the Skoda brand, I’m looking to make a return, SWMBO’s Fabia went a year ago and I’ve been wedded to Audi (for reasons we’ll beyond those which my own mind is capable of understanding) since my own treasured Superb went in 2012, but the contract on the current one is at an end and a Kodiaq or Superb Estate is looming large.

I’ve completed the conversion course, I’m once again familiar with the operation of indicators and understand the complex theory of a car that is almost as big on the inside as it is on the outside, I think that qualifies me with a provisional ŠKODA owner’s licence.

Looking at used, the mileage I cover is now greatly reduced so new doesn’t really stack up, and will update on progress as the chapter unfolds!

A warm welcome back to the Forum !

Spent a chunk of the last week on the hunt, Kodiaqs look expensive, my 20-25k budget is looking challenged for a nice Edition spec with a few desirable options (heated screen, pan-roof, tow bar and heated rear seats ideally). One or two around but the better ones are mostly five seats which I’d expect will be harder to sell in a few years time.

Superb estates are more promising but most of the better spec’d ones seem to be higher mileage (very high in one or two cases). A good L&K looks to attract a serious premium with dealers.

The March rush might bring some good examples out of the woodwork as 2-3 year PCPs expire and hopefully a greater  supply will get prices to a more palatable level.

Well after three months plus browsing the various sales sites right through lockdown, I viewed a couple of Superbs and was very nearly tempted by a very tidy Mk2 L&K estate when I came across a 67 plate Kodiaq Edition 190 DSG in what looks like very tidy condition. Ticks all the boxes, one owner, full history, two years warranty, pan roof, adaptive cruise and heated screen.

I’ve never bought a car I’ve never seen but the video and detailed photos have been enough to tempt me, the deal should be completed tomorrow and I’m back in the land of ŠKODA owners once again.

Looking forward to it immensely.

Collection now set up for Friday, not local so will be making a day of it and looking forward to a lengthy drive home to get to know the car on the road and have the weekend to find my way round the gadgets.

Would welcome any guidance from owners for a Kodiaq newbie.

Make sure all the simply clever bits are in the car such as ice scraper, umbrella etc as they tend to go missing plus make sure the locking wheel nut is in the tool kit. Good luck and take the long way home, shy.

Well its arrived, had a very leisurely 150 mile delivery run home and a chance to try it over a good selection of different types of road, it handled everything with complete competence. MPG was 47.9 by the display, better than a similar trip with my previous Q5 which would be in the 40-43 range. As all of our VAG diesels have improved significantly with miles, I'd expect the gap between them to widen, in earlier days the Q5 struggled to get out of the 30s so maybe 50+ might be possible.

The kit on it (Edition with a fair few options) is quite overwhelming, it'll take a while to work through it all but the highlight after one trip is the comfort of it, its a fantastic mile eater with an excellent driving position, my mk2 Superb was also first class in this respect but the Kodiaq is even better.

Updates to follow.

Well two weeks in and the Kodi is proving to be everything I’d hoped it would be, comfortable, practical and Reasonably economical. I wasn’t expecting miracles, the Q5 was sub 40mpg in the 67000 miles I covered in it but the good long haul consumption (42-47mpg) was swamped By pretty poor round town thirst, 30-32 on a 4mile commute every day. The Kodi is averaging 44, best was 47.9 on a 55 mile round trip which will improve with miles as all my other diesels have.

Space, practicality and comfort are the stand out attributes, the driving position is excellent, even better than the Q5 which I rated highly. The engine noise is greater than the Q5, but this is cancelled out by the lower tyre noise, overall both about the same I’d guess.

on the whole it’s not as well finished as the Q5 which had a beautifully crafted cabin, but it’s well screwed together and does everything it says on the tin exceptionally well.

More to come as the miles roll by!
