Satnav Map size/scale

Featured Replies

I have only just discovered - after nearly three years of ownership - that the knob on the right under the screen on my Amundsen Satnav changes the scale of the map.

Up until now I had been using my fingers on the screen for this, usually with results I didn't want. The knob changes the scale of the map whenever a map is shown (eg also in looking for a destination to programme).

This is thanks to my 10-year-old grandson, sitting in the front seat and saying "What does this do?" and not waiting for an answer (which would probably have been "Best not to touch anything....")

I'm mentioning this as subsequently I looked in my (French-language) handbook, and it's definitely not mentioned there.

If you press the view button on the bottom bar you can change it there and set it to automatic :)

Thanks!  But it's long been my experience that the "View" "Automatic" setting doesn't work very well, and it's how I have it set all the time.

But if you are looking to programme in a destination by picking it off the map rather than entering an address (and particularly an address that the Satnav doesn't recognise, which in my experience is a lot of them) then the control knob is very useful.

For me the most annoying feature of the Amundsen is that if you set the map scale manually (which I prefer) then next time you turn the ignition back on it has defaulted back to automatic, so I have to set the scale manually EVERY TIME - which I find very annoying.

My previous VAG vehicles have stayed at the map scale I set, which is how I would like my Amundsen to work :wall:

PD: yes, not retaining the previous settings is annoying.

So you might find using the RH knob to set the scale useful. It overrides the "auto" scale setting.

Auto doesn't work too well if you're cruising on a motorway (it sets the scale to something like 2km to a cm when you're going fast) and you want to see the name of the village you've just passed. Twisting the knob is a lot easier than trying to spread your fingertips on the screen.

And I now remember that the scale setting is controlled by touching the scale bar icon on the screen, not by the "View" on the bar at the bottom. In there, "auto" is for day and night, and on mine it thinks it's night if it's overcast (like now when it's raining), which isn't much help. Or should I wash the windscreen?

My point is that EVERY DAY I have to use the RH knob to get the map scale back to the fixed value I want, it always defaults to AUTO - which is IMHO rubbish.

That’s so odd. My Columbus stays put both on the VC and the screen.

Columbus vs. Amundsen???

Sounds like I'll have to make sure I get a vRS with a Columbus - looking to get a vRS around June (probably FL).

I can’t comment on the Amundsen as I never adjusted mine from Auto that I can recall but the MIB2.5 Columbus I have now will remember the setting, whether it’s Auto or a certain scale both on the radio screen (in either Nav or Home View) and the VC. The Columbus isn’t worth the £1000 extra over the Amundsen new but if you can find a car with one, it is worth it :)

I find the auto on the Columbus works perfectly, zooming in when you slowly moving through towns and then zooming right out as you hit the motorways.

Combine that with the "next few manoeuvres" window in the top-left corner showing you what turns you'll need to make in the future - perfect bit of kit.

I was lucky enough to find a car with it already fitted - it was the only one I went to see that had it. I didn't take the car based entirely on Columbus, but that 9.2" screen is really nice.

That's a feature I really miss ...

Does the MIB1 Amundsen not do that? Is there not a Split Screen View? The MIB2’s have it for sure.

SWMBO prefers to have the speed limit shown - can't do that on the Maxidot as we don't have the high spec camera.

Does the split screen view hide that? On the MIB2 it is on the right side but the split screen is on the left.

Yes, on the MIB1 they both try to occupy the same space on the left hand side.

What a pest! The MIB2 is a big step up and the 2.5 even more so. If you are upgrading the car, I think the MIB2 is such a nice system to have. One of the best infotainment systems on cars of this age and the Skoda skin is the easiest to navigate. My brother has a VW and my Dad has a Seat with this system and we all agree my Skoda has the easiest firmware to use and the UI is the most refined and mature.
