Octavia Scout Steering Rack

Featured Replies

hi guys

Hope you can help.

The steering rack on my Scout had play in it and has done for a while.

Anyway. I finally decided to get the rack replaced by a local indy VW specialist.

So took the car in yesterday and long story short it wasn't ready and so picked the car up again today.

Upon driving the car, the steering was a definite improvement, no more noises or play etc,

Probably like most of you, I'm sensitve to the sound of the car and noticed a considerable change in the engine noise in the cabin.

Got home tonight and put the car up on ramps to take a look.

I've attached the best photos I can which seem to suggest the reason for the added noise intrusion.

What I would like is to hear your opinions on what I should do  and say to the garage when I take the car back - that is assuming that what you see in the photos is incorrect.

Would greatly appreciate your feedbackas to me it seems like it's not the correct rack

Cheers

Is there something missing like the large rubber seal which sits between the rack and body..?

Something definitely isn't right there.

No wonder it is noisier in the cabin, I reckon after a weekend off the beer I could squeeze my whole body through that gap between the rack and bulkhead!

Thanks @silver1011

Looking like the original seal hasn't been refitted.

Notwithstanding the fact that it hasn't been fitted..

Would you say that it's a fire and emissions risk..?

Yeah, I'd say they've forgotten to replace the rubber boot...

And yes, I'd say that is a potential fire risk. The rack extends through the heat shields, and judging by the inner and outer seals on the rubber boot it looks pretty robust and therefore not something you'd simply not bother to replace.

Thanks again for the reply @silver1011

I'll go to the garage first thing tomorrow morning as soon as they open and see what they say.

I'm unsure of how they could have missed refitting it or why they would hand the car back like that.

Really disappointed. This wasn't a cheap job which makes it all the worse.

A rubber gaiter is not protection against fire nor could its absence create a fire risk.

Noise and fumes are the result of their neglect, they should put it right without question, mistakes happen, I reckon the mechanic realised some while later maybe even at the end of the job on road test or found the left over part & decided that he wasn't going to take it all apart again.
