New Timing Belt/Water Pump at 23,000miles?

Featured Replies

I bought my Skoda Octavia 1.6TD from a Skoda Main Dealer in N.E. England in May 2019. It had 13,000 miles on the clock. As of 01.03.20 I now have 23,000 miles on the Odometer. The Computer Message on the dashboard says I am due an oil change. I rang the dealer where I bought the car, and was told I need to have the Cam Belt & Water Pump replaced as well as the Serv ice. This will cost £767 in total. Do I need to have these major parts replaced having just 23K on the clock? Please help me if you can! I would appreciate your views/experience you have to offer.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.

A mod can move your post to the Octavia section.

Who did you speak to at the dealership ?,

they seem to have lost the plot with a 23,000 mile car unless it is maybe 5 years old.

When was the car new???

can't be 5 years old, the original water pump wouldn't of lasted that long :D:D:D:D

Just a couple of things that may help...

1: NEED ?   The manufacturer places a time and distance interval at which they recommend the timing belt is replaced. On your car, this would be 5yr after it's been registered, in other words, if your car was registered on or before 09/03/2015.   But remember, a recommendation is not a need, the decision is entirely yours.

2: Nowhere does it say the waterpump NEEDS changing. The reason most people change the waterpump at this time is because replacement involves removing the cambelt - so you may as well change it if the belt's already off, then you're only really paying for parts + minimal labour time. It may be good practice but not obligatory.

3: £767 for an oil change + timing belt + water pump seems expensive to me. If you do want the work done, shop around for prices. They same firm doesn't have to carry out both jobs - garage A could do the oil service, garage B the belt + pump. Then take the best prices back to Skoda and ask them to price match. As long as the other garages are using the same parts for the job then most main dealers will price match, if not then simply walk away and have the work carried out elsewhere.
