Crash test 5th gear

Featured Replies

They have just done another of there crash test between a new generation Renault Espace and a Land rover Discovery Mk1 to see wich would be safer.

No suprises then that the Espace came out a lot better, being the latest shape, the Disco was a mk1 which basicly was designed and launched in 1989 (G) so therefore the test was slightly weighted in the Renault favour with its 5* ncap score, They failed to say this on the program saying both vehicales were of same value, which maybe so, but you can't conpare the two like for like.

I would like to see the same test done with a New Discovery 3 see how that would fare against a new Espace.

Sorry if this seems like a bit of a rant, I just don't think it was a fare test just seemed like another 4x4 bash.

As for the guy doing the valeting

SUV's never score well in crash tests because they simply don't crumple. They stop dead causing the passengers to be thrown forward which results in multiple injuries.

I'd be interested to find an SUV that scores well in a crash test.....

But at the same cost thats exactly what parents will be doing when they pick the car and if you looked at the cars driving away from the school earlier on many of them *were* older 4x4s

IIRC, presenter said the air-bag on Disco didn't goes off

There was a fault light on prior to the test (stated in auto express) however the killer injury was the svering that would have occured to the legs in the disco. It is far easier in the reanult to have stuff slide under the passanger compartment than it is in a 4x4 which is limited by all the extra drive gear.

As for the guy doing the valeting £500 a wash, £6000 tub of wax warmed in his hands and applied by HAND and a 65 step car washing plan with micrometers to see how much wax to applie and buff

Surely you give your own car the same tlc!!

Crash test was a bit of a joke and was more like an anti 4x4 video to me! Series 1 Disco vs 03 Espace - come on be serious!?

Hi

Interesting comparison of survivability vs price. Interestingly, studies in the US have shown that per mile travelled, the SUV class of vehicle has more fatalities than saloon cars.

Having said that they dont have as many small cars there.

Chris

How about driving one of each past a Jet engine whils it is running on near full power , & see what happens - a good wind stability test

Thats what i was trying to get over:thumbup: most of these type of cars are genraly company owend, so you wouldn't have a 10yr old land rover,

have been looking around and have yet to find a series 3 Espace for under

It's only an indication as to what can happen, as much to challenge perceptions than make an outright point. I'm happy to get all the 4x4s turned into Espace's because you and I would like longer in a bump if they did :thumbdwn:
