Rythmic droning sound

Featured Replies

I noticed that the engine note on my Superb (2012, 170 bhp TDI) was making a regular 'droning' sound the other day. I had set the cruise control at 69.9 mph (!) and the engine note sounded as if I was applying the throttle slightly and then easing off - about every two seconds. I switched off the cruise control, but it continued, so that's eliminated.

I think I can detect the same effect on tick-over when warm, although it's barely noticeable.

Car has done c.85k miles, full service history.

Any ideas as to what this might be?

Rear tyres it has been known on many a Skoda. Any new tyres changes recently or wearing low or inner accelerated wear ?

As above, the infamous saw toothing from the rear tyres (Google it, there are quite a few threads on it) is the most likely cause, an inherent design feature on a lot of MkII's.

After that I'd be checking out the wheel bearings.

Thanks guys. I have indeed had a new set  of wheels and tyres fitted. I did wonder if that was the cause, but thought I could detect the effect slightly when stationary and ticking-over. Probably paranoia!

So I guess it'll wear off after a bit of wear.

Thanks again.

I would take it for a 4 wheel alignment.

My local garage charges about £100 including minor adjustments.

All my previous VW's & current Superb have benefited & needed an alignment.

Much quieter & less rear tyre wear afterwards.

The problem is finding a garage that know how to use the equipment properly.

Garages that do a lot of competition vehicles are usually good.

Otherwise recommendations from customers who have had good results.

If you don't get the alignment sorted, you're likely to end up with severe wear on the inside shoulders of the tyres pretty quickly.
