Remove shiny plastic trim surrounding gear shifter

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Like probably many others, I'm tired of looking at scratches accumulating on the shiny plastic trim inside my MK3 estate, despite my great care when cleaning... So today I started wrapping them in a dark grey brushed chrome vinyl. Looks very nice and contrasts well with the existing brushed aluminium- looking plastic (can post pics if that's of interest). So far I've done the rear facing air vents and the infotainment surround (bit tricky this one, with very tight allowances around buttons and hard corners... was not 100% perfect but good enough). I also want to do the sliding lid thinggy (guess that's not removable) and the plastic around the shifter, though I have no idea how to get it out... Tried hald gently pulling on it from wherever I could grab but it would move. Any idea how that's done?

Cheers!

Yeah, this obsession with black gloss plastic shows the designers are morons.

Not sure if this helps much...

Thanks mate, that was immensely helpful. Actually an easy job once you figure it out. The removal tool can be just a flat hook to pull on the locking tabs. Now the only thing missing is the sliding lid for the phone compartment 😁, but that one won't come out without removing parts o the upper center console, or so it seems. I'll just try to do it in place

Would you also have the electric schematics of the DSG harnesses? I'd like to identify the 2 wires dedicated to the + & - in manual mode.

Thank you for your help! ;)

Here's how it looks now

Nice, that's how it should have come from the factory. Any surface you touch or is in a high traffic area should be matt and scratch resistant.

I assume you pulled from the front edge (toward the charge-pad area) first to get the main surround up?

It's like industrial design has no history and interior decorators have taken over in the automotive world.

Sorry no. Adding paddles are we? :)

Great job!

One good thing about FL Superb is that this trim piece around the stick has matt finish. But DIY is another level.

@digifish No, I already have paddles shifters. 😉

I envision to invert + & - to make it more ´natural’, like many other brands or sport/race cars. 😁

I’ve seen this mod on an Audi forum, but I’m missing the electrical schematics. 😐

Here's a couple of photos taken outside with better light. Somehow the camera can't capture the true color of the vinyl wrap, maybe because of the brushed effect. But it does look super good, I'm very pleased with how this turned out.

Thanks for the pics. Good to know there is a future solution for the day when mine is a mess. What wrap did you use?

I need help, how to remove number 3 and then number 1 to connect Start Stop Off module?

Instruction is not detailed.

From where should I start, front, back, should I use some tool, should I pull it from inside, to grab with gaiter?

I'm sure you just pull the gaiter up and the clips let go quite easily...........not sure about how the switch banks are held in.

Switches are next step.

I tried pulling gaiter and surrounding together, but without success. Guess I have to try harder.

u don't need to remove the gaitor to remove the switch panels.

i have removed the switch panel myself as i also put in a start-stop module.

u need a trim removal tool to pry the front of the switch panel.  while jamming the top side, carefully pry the middle up - it should then pop out.

Great, thanx. Will try that.

I guess first option is easier if I figure out how to remove central part with gaiter.

Great work @pcspinheiro!

How did you manage to remove the stich gaiter/boot?

I tried to pry it up front and back between chrome frame and the leather but with no luck.

I'm afraid to use too much force not to break something.

Thank you @MartiniB.

But I need to remove just the leather part in manual.

It looks different than with an automatic transmission.

Hmm. Maybe I should to remove this shiny part first and then unhook the leather part from the bottom.

I'll try.
