Octavia 1.9 ASV using engine oil

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Got an issue with my 2004 Octavia. It's always needed the engine oil topping up every 2 weeks or so/about 5-600 miles of mainly motorway, which was around 150ml.

Since last week, it started needed topping up more frequently, probably doing about 250 miles to 300ml engine oil. I topped it up yesterday with 300ml and the low engine light came on again today, I'd only done around 120 miles.

I'm gonna get it up on stands and check for leaks on the weekend, but there are no oil marks on the drive.

I can not see any plumes of smoke as I'm driving on the motorway which I'd assume I would if I was burning that much oil???

Any ideas what I can look for/check. Would a blocked EGR have anything to do with it at all as I think mine is blocked and there are signs of engine oil around it..........

Cheers

What engine code/version/type is it? Ive a Diesel ASV and other than annual oil changes, I have never needed to top up oil until recently, even then it was slight.

When I got the car it had a bout 78-79k miles on it and Ie put a further 60k miles on it, which I still consider low. Whats the mileage on the car? how much are you doing every week?

Mine's an ASV too 1.9Tdi. Milage on mine is around 185k. When I posted this, I'd used about a litre in a week which was about 500 miles :O

From what I read about (and experienced for the last 7 years) the ASV, it is reliable, Id thought you might have had a different engine/fuel type or higher mileage, but 185k doesn't  seem out of the ordinary to have problems for an ASV, (but I'm no expert). I didn't think you were going to say ASV.

I haven't had any problems with mine, and reading up it, that doesn't seem unusual.

I even thought of getting a newer Mk1 and keeping my current engine as a donor in case a replacement cars engine had a problem, but I don't have time or space for that now.

Maybe the oil loss is particular to a previous owners maintenance or usage? I cant say what would cure it.

spelling

325000 miles in an ASV and never needed to top up a single drop of oil inbetween oil changes after 225000, before that it was just once when I had gone a couple of years between services.

My guess would be turbo seals.

I've been told to check the bottom intercooler hose for a lot of oil, that's a sign of turbo seals. I'll do that this week when I get a chance...................

right, just got my arse in gear. Just w whisper of oil around the bottom intercooler pipe/inside the IC, which I've been told is perfectly normal.

I removed and cleaned the EGR which was full of crud. So how exactly does the EGR work on these cars? I assume the large mushroom creates a vacuum and pulls the plunger up (which I think goes down a hard pipe to the turbo??)

Also, the PCV valve thing (black plastic mushroom shaped thing on the right hand side, what id that supposed to do cos as far as I can tell, it doesn't stop or block any flow through it??

Hi,

Has anyone got any pointers/thoughts on what I can check for my crazy oil consumption? It got dramatically worse this week, using 330ml (lucozade bottle) per 60 miles :O I cannot see any leaks under the car and I would imagine it would be a blue plume in my rear screen if it was being burnt. I'm going to jetwash the engine this weekend if I get the chance and keep an eye on and under the engine bay.

I may also try this stuff as I need to find out where the oil is going https://www.ringautomotive.com/en/product/RLD4

Is there anywhere else it could go apart from a exterior leak or being burnt out of the exhaust?

Cheers

Vijay
