Glow plug problems (All 4)

Featured Replies

Hello!

I seem to have an issue with my glowplugs. I get the fault code P161A, P161B, P161C, P161D. Could this be related to a faulty harness?

I was trying to find a fuse for the glowplugs too but couldnt find any, have I missed something?

Just as likely to be all 4 outside of operating limits dependant on your mileage.

When I first came onto this MK2 forum I had the same problem, could not accept that all 4 could be faulty yet the car start so well and so evenly on all cylinders even when very cold.

wiser heads than mine convinced me not to dismiss their advice out of hand and to at least test them all, they were correct, new glowplugs fitted, started no differently to before but no more fault codes.

Thanks for clearing that up. What OHM numbers should I be looking for?

If I remember correctly, they should be less than 1 ohm in resistance.

Thanks. I will check it when next opportunity comes!

What are the downsides for driving with faulty glowplugs?

Glow plugs heat pre and post starting so if they don't work you may get poorer starts in cold weather and you may see some smoke out of the back after you start it up, if you have a DPF equipped car this may mask the smoking aspect.

Only time I couldn't start it was in 2018 and it was -30 degrees outside. The electric warmer hadn't been plugged in 😁

Fuse 27 (50A) in the E-box under the bonnet, I think.
