What's this

Can Any one help me identify what this is?

I suspect some sort of sealer from when the oil sump got a whack.

The only thing is my mechanic charged me for a new sump and I only went looking when I noticed oil stain appearing underneath from slow drip.

If you update your car profile then I'll move this to the relevant forum.

It does kind of look like a kerb side autos bodge with 'liquid metal.

Hears another image.

I should have gone to a proper optician & not Spec Savers, but i think i see where someone has been using a centre punch to get something like JB Weld / Metal Putty / Liquid Metal to get a grip.

that's definitely been patched.

if you were charged for a new sump, and have a receipt, I'd be phoning in and telling them you're contacting trading standards.

Thanks. The annoying bit is I don't keep the paper reciept because they always email me a copy of the invoice so I went through my emails and sure enough I never got an invoice for the job done on the sump.

So quick update,

I questioned the mechanic about the picture

and they're saying that the oil sensor is broken, that one of the bolts that hold the sensor on must have gotten hit (no sign of impact damage) and that it needs a new sensor to stop the leak.

So he is claiming that the 2 pack epoxy putty he or the tooth fairy put on was to repair a stripped or damaged thread for the temp sensor and not to plug the leak in the sump.

I know what it looks like to me, and I know what it (he) sounds like.

What did he say about you having paid for a new sump and its fitting?

The sump breaking happened few months ago this recent leaking just started following a service so they're saying the sensor must have got hit and that he had to seal it has a temporary fix.

But for this to be true surely there would be some impact damage visible on the sensor

Your eyes looking directly at it will be better then mine at any time let alone viewing a picture on the computer.

Does the sump look new to you?

I can see some sealant or glue on the sensor connector where the last person to remove and reconnect it has broken the retaining latch.

No way does that sump look new to my eyes but theres only one that works and it aint good!

The sump was replaced when I sheared it 6 months ago.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, they've offered me to come in and watch the sensor being replaced and show that the sump is intact and that the sealant is just on the sensor.

As for weather the sealant was put on 6 months ago or recently I can't prove it so dont really have a leg to stand on.

Agreed that the (flexible) sealant is only on the sensor but if they maintain that the sump was replaced with a new one 6 months ago then the tooth fairy has patched it with 2 pack epoxy putty/chemical metal since then and also put 100000 miles worth of grime etc on it.

But photos can mislead, presumably you took the photo so you should be the one to judge if its a new sump, I would take them up on their offer = call their bluff because under the ramp you will have much better visibility and can get your head to the right distance to focus well.

Do they know that you have taken a photo? Might be worth keeping that to yourself in case they remove the epoxy or even swop the sump before you get there.

do you not have an undertray on your vehicle?
