1982 Skoda estelle 120L cold start/cold idle problem

Featured Replies

Hello folks.

It's springtime now and i'm getting my Estelle ready to run. It had Lada 1200 carb. installed by previous owner,  which had good cold start performance, but stuttered when driven on higher loads...

Anyway got hold of the previous owner and got stock carb back, did regular maintenance on it, changed seals & diaphragms, greased joints and checked for clogs in jets.

Now it runs smooth once warmed up correctly, and no problems when starting warm engine. BUT cold starts, ie. 4 hours not driven, its real pain in the ass. I prime carb with fuel pump and pull choke all the way up, hit accelerator once or twice, crank, it fires up, revs to 1500-2500 for 4 seconds and dies. I pump accelerator twice again and it fires for another 4 seconds. If I keep pumping accelerator when its fires I can keep it running until it's warm.

If I do not use choke, it'll try but it wont start.

I have already checked coil & points & timing & plugs & air leaks.

I'm really up for any tips to get her starting smoothly in the mornings.

thank you in advance  -Miska

I got it working.

Thought to update here, as similiar problems I found on other forums had not been updated or they had copletely swapped the carb.

So the "trick" was to firstly try to **** my carb up by poking on wrong endcap as per hayness instructions I was trying to remove idle mixturescrews tamper proof cap, only the hayness picture wasn't too good on showing the location. When i got the right cap off and adjusted the idlemixture screw and air correction screw according to hayness manual it now starts with few pumps on accelerator and choke on full and keeps running with no problems.
