1.9SDI cracked gearbox casing

Featured Replies

Hi,

On my 2006 MK1 Fabia 1.9SDI i was loosing oil from the gearbox.

Thought it is the input shaft oil seal but actually the casing is cracked.

Any experience what is the cause or what to do?

Thanks

That is nasty :) You will need another gearbox.

Thanks.

Any idea if this kind of crack could be from hitting the curb with the wheel a few years ago, or something is happening inside the differential?

The shaft seem to rotate freely?

Does not seem to be SMS done by rivets.

Possible to use epoxy to stop the leak or weld the crack?

It could be welded but you'd need to strip the gearbox, epoxy might work but you'd have to drain the oil and get it really clean so it would bond properly.

Oil is drained already.

I was planning to bond it because doesn't require dismantling.

Prior to it, good cleaning with gasoline or thinner and some grinding of the crack.

However i would like if somebody can comment if this crack patern would originate from impact coming trough the wheel/axle or it has to do with inner problems?

Shafts seem to rotate freely?

It's been caused by a very heavy external impact, probably in a loss of control incident in bad weather where the wheel hit something very hard side on.

Thanks for your reply.

Thatbis exactly whar happened 2 years ago. Probably the crack keep on expanding slowly untill recently it started weeping.

Most probably will try to bond it first

It won't last long, better to find a secondhand gearbox if you can.

I am afraid so too.

Tell me if i get courage to strip the gearbox in order to take the casing to a welder, could I still use all the old seals and bearings ?

It is too risky to weld it now without stripping it down?

I am tight with cash...

If you try and weld it without stripping it you will have a fire from all the oil residue inside, plus you'll burn the oil seals.

If I had to repair it quickly in the field I'd fill it with water to weld it then replace the diff seals if they got heat damaged, empty the water, then leave it somewhere hot for 24 hours so any remaining water would evaporate before refitting it.

Thanks, i will have to rethink it

Safety pin which keeps the planetary shaft in place was broken. The planetary shaft protruded from the differential gears and was rubbing the casing untill it wore down and cracked.

Will check if can be welded.

Ended up in welding the crack, cleaning the metal shavings and assembling the gearbox.

I know, not the smartest nor reliable thing to do..

Will see how long it lasts.
