Under bonnet "Heat Reflective" panel

Featured Replies

So with all the "lock downs" and some additional spare time on my hands, I decided to start a little project.

My Passat TDI has an under bonnet Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel on the underside of the bonnet "black noise insulating material".

However the Superb did not have this.

I looked f the Superb TDI had this, but it does not either.

So I though, let's make my own.

I am happy with the result...however;

- The reflective tape does not hold very well to the black "furry" material of the hood lining.

- I am very happy with the Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel that I purchased from Kool Wrap; https://www.koolwrap.com.au/product/aluminium-exhaust-shield-panel-embossed-aluminium-semi-rigid/

(they provide Heat Protection products for V8 Supercars here in Australia).

The Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel is a "near match" for the existing heat protection on the firewall (near the Turbo).

- I have tried sourcing an adhesive backed Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel, however I am yet to be able to find this.

Would anyone have any suggestions as to where VW Group source this product?

My car is a 206kw version and I understand that it may not be required, but I was just looking at a project to resolve some boredom.

Any suggestions or alternatives that you could thin of?

What is the benefit of reflecting radiant heat down from an already insulated bonnet?

It must have been fitted for a reason on the Passat.

Same question for me...

@ope126 What do you want to improve? 🤔

My Passat doesn't have one, might just be AU spec?

Yes I was thinking it must be something to do with the extreme heat conditions there, bonnet vents I could understand but reflecting heat back towards where you would normally want to be rid of it?

Given that in the mid-day sun you would not be touching the centre of the bonnet aside from frying eggs it cant be for personal protection, perhaps the paint was degrading?

It appears to be on 2.0TDI 190 PS and above.

Here is a picture of a German Passat.

So nothing to do with Australia or "Hot" climates.

Maybe just a Volkswagen thing for their higher powered TDI's.

Here is a 2020 Mercedes Benz A45S, it too has additional Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel under the bonnet.

It will be a problem of engine heat degrading or unsticking the bonnet insulation.

Yeah, that is what I am facing. The reflective tape around the outside is starting to peel back ever so slightly.

Makes me think, if could somehow use some industrial adhesive / glue to secure the Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel.

But preferably, I would love to be able to source the OEM Aluminum Embossed Heat Reflective panel to use in my application.

The bonnet's are different shapes underneath also, as I thought I might be able to get another Passat one for the Superb.

But no luck...
