Rattling noise on startup

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I recently bought my Rapid Spaceback ( 2017 1.0 TSI 110 SE) ~22k miles. I noticed on startup in both cold and warm weather conditions a rattling noise coming from the engine bay. The rev counter goes up to approx. 1400-1500rpm for about a minute, during which I hear this noise, then it goes back to the normal idle of ~1000rpm.

If I rev it gently to about 1800-2000 during this one minute period the noise does not go away.

Any ideas why this can be?

Thanks!

Could be the timing chain tensioner.

Mine used to rattle when starting cold (and then just starting in general). Easy for a garage to replace it and usually done in a couple of hours.

The motor has a belt not a chain.

Maybe make a video so it's easier to understand what sort of rattling it's making.

These 1.0 TSI engines seem to have all sorts of problems with rattling. It could be camshaft adjuster, turbo wastegate or something else.

@enmvaak

1,400-1,500 rpm on start up and then a drop to 1,000 rpm is still high IMO.

But those that run the same car as you can maybe say if 'Normal' or 'They all do that'.

My experience of 1.0 TSI but later one's with GPF's and DSG's is about 200 rpm less than that.

?

What servicing has the car had, is it 2 fixed services @ 9,400 miles, or any variable service?

?

Is it VW 504 oil in so 5w 30 FS III ?

It's a 6 speed manual, probably DSG might be different.

It had the attached services as per the history certificate from Skoda - I would hope they used the recommended oil.

OK, so possible first oil change at 16,545 miles which is not unusual if on Variable Servicing.

(Maybe nothing at 6,300 done.)

?

Is there an Invoice from 27/1/2020 showing what oil was used?

I would also hope they used the correct oil.

If i had a noisy 1.0 TSI or a keeper i would used the Oil that can be used for Fixed Servicing and go VW 502 so 5w 40 FS.

& do fixed servicing intervals. 9,400 miles / 372 days, which ever comes soonest.

I don't have the ivoice for that, previous owner was leasing it from Skoda- that is where all the service history is from. Before I purchased it they did an oil change and I will keep your suggested interval- it's the same I think as Skoda recommends.

Thanks!

I posted a video on the noise, maybe that can give you an idea if any parts are faulty?

Sounds like it is coming from the engine. You may need a mechanics stethoscope in order to pinpoint the cause of this noise.

Took it to Skoda authorized service, they recognized that it's a bit noisy however according to the technician it's normal at this level-especially that it goes away.

Hope it will not cause issues down the line, the car will be under warranty for the next few years as well - if there would be any problems caused by this then I did my part by raising it as a concern so I'm covered- if you have something similar I recommend you do the same.
