Port Forwarding

Featured Replies

I've been messing around with port forwarding on my home setup. I have a Netgear DG834v2 ADSL Modem/Router connected to a Netgear WPN824 Rangemax Wireless Router.

My question is - If I open or forward the ports on the WPN834 do I also need to open the same ports on the DG834?

What is it you want to do?

Personally I use UPnP as it sorts port forwardig for you....if you're networking to some sort of IP device.

I am trying to use P2P. The software does have UPnP as do the the routers but I couldn't seem to get it to work.

uPnP service in windows enabled?

I've enable the UPnP user interface in control panel/add remove programs/components.

I don't use windows firewall so I shouldn't need to do anything there - will my AVG firewall stop it?

I have been doing a lot of reading up and most places say I should use a fixed IP in the 192.168 range on my PC - would that be right or should I leave it up to DHCP?

I used to have my setup like this -

phone line->Modem Router->Wireless Router->PC

I've now changed it to -

phone line->Modem Router->PC

phone line->Modem Router->Wireless Router

Which is the optimum configuration?

Stu,

why are you using the wireless broadband router?

Just for more connections or for a wireless connection to your pc?

Your ADSL Router is DG834 which should have wireless capability..right?

Doesn't matter about a fixed IP address range...DHCP is fine..unless your hosting something but then you can always use DDNS to sort that.

No the DG834 is not wireless Adrian, the DG843G is though.

I jumped a bit early and bought a MIMO Rangemax before they launched a combined modem/wireless/router. I wish I had got the Linksys SRX unit now.

My PC is wired to the router and i only use wireless for my Laptop.

I have D-Link MIMO ADSL Router and it works fine. Should just utilise the slowest path in your LAN.

Going back to the wireless side...you could have used a wireless access point instead...Belkin do a MIMO access point.

Yeah. Could have done lots of things on reflection but I'm stuck with this little lot for now. :P

Aye.:D

Back to your configuration...TBH I don't think it makes much difference between how you had it set-up originally to now.

I have it set up in the second configuration and it's working well, downside is I can't see my USB printer that is attached to my PC from my laptop.

This is a useful resource for anyone with a home network that is having difficulty with port forwarding chaps....

Been using that one thanks Tony :thumbup:

Remind me when I'm down next Stu, will have a look if I spot anything. I've got a three-broadband connection network at home, involving a cable modem, two ADSL router/modems, two loadbalancers and a few other bits and pieces + a few wireless networks :rofl:

(yes that's overkill for at home :P ) - should be able to get you going.

Yeah that would be an idea, ta:thumbup:
