2. 0 diesel Yeti - timing belt or chain?

Can anyone confirm whether a MY2016 2.0 diesel Yeti has a timing belt or chain and when this (years/mileage) needs to be replaced?  On my old Yeti I could obtain this info. directly from the servicing schedule record booklet, but since all this went hi-tec I'm a bit lost!  Thanks.

Like all other VAG 2.0 TDI engines, it's got a cambelt.  The current recommendation is to change the belt every 5 years or 130k miles.

Some consider its worth changing the water pump at the same time.

I'd read somewhere recently that some vehicle manufactures have started to build engines and place the timing chain (not the belt as with the Yeti) INSIDE their engines, also with the water pump placed there too. Is that true and if so do you know which vehicles have this design (so I can avoid)?

Apparantly the Ford 3 cylinder Ecoboost engines have that design. 

A well designed chain and water pump system should last the life of the engine, cambelts are good when ok and quiet but have a habit of snapping without any warning. Most earlier vehicles used to be built like that. I have owned a number of vehicles with timing chains over the years.

 

Hence a belt that should last 10 years is required to be replaced at 5 as a very small percentage will fail at around that age, wrecking the engine. (Some will not even last the five years, but that is a very small %.)

Unfortunatley it is an age thing, and even a hardly used vehicle has to have it changed at 5 years.

"The life of the engine".  I guess that begs the question of whether such manufacturers have a similar expectation for the life of their engines compared to what many of their customers might hope for.  While some manufacturers in the UK have recently started to offer 7 year/150,000 mile manufacturer warranties (Ssanyong for example) others don't (not yet anyway). But heyho these new fangled things 😄

Yes, this is true and was one of the much-discussed design features when that engine was launched a few years ago.  It introduced the need for belt/oil compatibility testing to ensure that oil didn't cause the belt to fail.  The design helped to keep the engine's footprint down, with the engine block supposedly being able to sit on an A4 piece of paper.

The 1.2 puretech in our 308sw has an internal belt. Runs in the oil. Around £400 to replace. 

 

There have been issues with belts breaking up and contaminating the oil. 

Sorry for posting here but can't start a new topic. I have a 2015 Yeti with eu6 2.0 110ps 1968cc engine. Has it is 5 years old it requires a cam belt.  Engine no CUUA102687. I cannot find a cam locking tool kit for a CUU engine none of suppliers on e-bay/amazon quote for CUU. I am going to change belt myself but would like cam locking tool before starting.

Thanks for that. It looks like I might have to get a universal kit. Although I would prefer one for my engine. I can find them for the earlier 2.0 tdi yeti engines but not for the latest CUU engines.
