Declutching to start engine.

Never had to do it on previous cars and to date have never started a car in gear and lurched forward, came close a few times but my reactions are quick & I immediately stamp on the clutch without even needing to stop cranking.

 

This "safety feature" on the Yeti is driving me mad and I have not become used to it as people said, its making me all the more frustrated, I am a wash n go type person and cant be doing with pre-flight checklists!!

 

Can it be disabled using VCDS?

 

Given that the vehicle knows when it's in gear and even which gear is selected (dont know about reverse) I can't actually see the need for making me declutch to start the engine when it knows the vehicle is in neutral.

 

Am I the only one who cant adapt to the new order?

 

Anyone found a way of disabling or over-riding the interlock?

I wonder if this feature is there to protect the modern engine that has a risk of major damage if it is rotated backwards? EG, I have read of reports of Ford diesels (without the feature)  that have suffered a timing  chain jumping a tooth or two when inadvertently attempting to start in gear. Presumably the car lurches forward and bounces backwards slightly?

The car can ony presume what gear you are in whilst driving from the revs and the speed, it does not know if the car is in gear or what gear itis it when stationary unless there is some sensor built in that I havn't seen before.

 

It knows when its in reverse from the reverse light switch.

 

I don't really like the feature but it would of saved me a £1000 car repair and a £500 garage door if my mk1 TT had that feature. To cut a long story short, I never ever leave my car in gear unless its stood while i'm on holiday. Came back from said holiday, went to make sure the car battery wasn't flat and all was in order, stupidly leaned in and started the car whilst not actually been sat in the car. The car lurched forward and that would of been that if my drive wasn't on a slight slope. There was just enough inertia to fire a cylinder, then just enough inertia to fire again, then the third time it hit the brand new garage door that I had only just bought :D

It will happen to me one day if I do find how to overcome the feature, my Dad brought a brand new Polo, one of the very first in 1978 as I think his first ever new car when he retired hoping to get many trouble and rust free miles from it, the former it did, the latter was compromised by him doing what you did into his workbench in the garage because he let my stepmother use the car just that once only and she parked it in gear.

 

Many times when I am working on the car, say after an oil change I want to run the engine & check for leaks but am wearing dirty clothes & dont want to get in, I just hate the feature.

When starting what have you started it for?
If for moving off in either direction the clutch is already depressed to put it into gear, what could be easier than that, it's not as if it adds an extra thing to do.

Also a pain on cold mornings having to get in the car to start it and then get back out to scrape, first world problems

I hope this doesn't degenerate into a driving style debate like the other threads I found on this subject.

 

I have been driving 44 years and in that time have reflected on and put to the test many things that I was told to do, many of them complete rubbish by people who turned out to be incapable of reasoning and thinking themselves.

 

The excess load from the drag of the gearbox first motion shaft is de minimus but the excess loading on the thrust release bearing and crankshaft thrust washers is very significant and they are very weak on some VAG engines, its for that reason deduced by rebuilding hundreds of engines and not simply believing what I was always told that given the choice I prefer to start an engine without depressing the clutch, to me its like sitting stationary for several minutes at traffic lights in gear with the engine running.

 

Anyway I can conclude that on my 2015 Yeti whilst appearing to have the choice in practice I dont so will just have to get used to the "depress clutch to start engine" procedure. I found how it could be coded out in VCDS, its a long coding option in the Central Electrics Module and it accepts the coding to de-activate the function but does not actually change anything, I believe that it would work on earlier cars.

I'm too lazy to scrape so wait for the heater to do its job. Problem solved if I'm in the wife's manual Karoq.🙄

Oh dear, the postings overlapped, looks like its going to start a mega debate again, had I searched the forum before I would have realised and never started the thread, the info is there now for anyone wanting to give it a try, I believe it works on earlier vehicles, I will see if there is any way to close the thread.

Sounds like it!

Lots of cars now have this feature.

And don't buy an auto as you have to have your foot on the brake to start.

Currently spending half my time in my Auto KESSY Superb and the other half driving the wife's manual KESSY Karoq so I have to constantly think do I press the clutch pedal or the brake to start them. Keeps the brain working.😷

It’s a safety feature of all modern manual cars and for automatics you have to put your foot on the brake. It’s the world we live in so frankly it is one of those  "grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference” In this case you need serenity!!!!

I am serene now that I had the courage to change the setting and in doing so gained the wisdom that I can change the setting but not the actual function.

 

Everybody is different and when someone asks if or how they can do something if I have the knowledge I try to help them, if I have wisdom I may point out any undesired effects or drawbacks, what I try my hardest not to do is say "why are you different to me or others?"

 

The function can be removed on earlier vehicles and if the above helps just one person then it will have been worthwhile.

Okay for you but what if someone else uses the car - mechanic?- and inadvertently turns the key without checking if it's in gear and someone gets hurt? Interesting situation as you have disabled a safety feature. Also will fail MOT because of disabling safety feature.

Is it worth all the hassle and risks?

 

Let alone the insurance implications if the car lurches onto something or someone with an undeclared modification!

I don’t see what the issue is. Quite happy to get in press the pedal to start car and then perhaps get out whilst it is warming up to clear the screens of ice.
