Engine temperature too low

Featured Replies

Hi everyone i'm new to this forum.

I have a skoda octavia MK3 1.6l 2014, and for the past few days the engine temperature has been dropping below 90 degrees. It seems to hover between 80-85 degrees then randomly jumps back up to 90. has anyone seen this before and could it be the thermostat?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Could be a temperature sensor, the thermostat or the Water pump possibly.

Thanks for the advice cheezemonkhai, just had my local garage take a look and they suspecting its a thermostat. but they saying its burried deep and it needs a few items removed to get to it. I had the waterpump and cambelt changed at skoda about 8,000 miles ago so hope its not that!

you dont by any chance know if this car has a secondry thermostat?

Vehicles with DSG gearbox have a second thermostat.

The DSG stats fail open & cause overcooling of the engine, but much easier to change though.

Don't worry too much. Mine's has been doing this for two years and 80k miles. I've got a new temp sensor but I'm too lazy to fit it as you need to remove the airbox. The thermostat is buried on the front of the engine underneath the intercooler piping.

If it was me I would use vcds to scan the car and read the sensor values and thermostat states.

If that will cost a lot I would start with the cheapest to swap, which is probably the temperature sensor.

it might be worth considering going back to the dealer if your garage doesn’t have suitable diagnostic equipment as paying for diagnostic is still cheaper than throwing parts after parts at a problem.
