Boot cover differences... why?

Featured Replies

More of a question really and one that means my car is less "practical" than my wife's.

We both have MY19 Karoq cars.  Mine is the Sportline 4x4 and hers is an SE-L.

Mine have fixed rear seats and hers has the Varioflex seats.  I get all these differences but the one that bugs me most is the boot cover.

Hers has the retractable version which is great for quick removal (opening) but mine as the "standard" shelf that I have to completely remove and leave at home to carry the dog..... why is this?  Why cant they be the same?  I can't seem to think of any reason for them to be different?  As the back side trims are different it appears a retro fit one would be impossible.

Anyone got any idea.....

Well the rigid one wouldn't cope with the reclining and sliding VarioFlex seats I suppose - without leaving gaps behind the seats at least. And I prefer the rigid one to the retractable one as you can lie coats on it so I'm glad they have supplied it on the Sportline! It opens automatically as you open the tailgate, so although it might take up more room when removed I don't carry dogs so it isn't a problem for me. :)

very possible Chris.  I do like to put my coat on it when closed, but bit of a pain to have to keep removing and leaving at home..... May have to look at leaving it out?

You just have to take a look at the Yeti which came for Varioflex seats for your answer, the cardboard parcelshelf for that thing is a monstrosity - the flap on the current 'net' parcel shelf is a much neater solution.

I'll never buy a car with a cheap nasty cardboard fixed cover again, for exactly the reason pointed out above - dogs. Plus if out shopping and you see a tall plant for instance, no problem but fixed means you have to store the shelf in the car which can sometimes be a pain. It's amazing the amount of cars the fixed comes with - Atecas I can understand as their seats are fixed but Tiguan also has sliding rear seats and a back rest that can be fixed more upright, but that has a cardboard shelf too. Simply not clever!  ( Who'd have thought a Skoda having been designed more thoroughly than a VW? ).

Coats? I hang them on the coat hooks, or if people are in the rear seats, they go in the boot.

The solid Yeti parcel shelf stored neatly behind the rear seats when not in use, does the Karoq shelf not do this?

Not fixed on our SEL it is attached to the tailgate so as you open the boot it slides up and out the way. If you want to turn it into a van, remove the rear seats like the Yeti and the rear roller blind rear cover simply lifts out. Did this when wife wanted to collect her office chair to work from home for the last 11 weeks.;)

A tad useless if you need to fold the rear seats tho.

On my Octavia hatchback and Superb the solid parcel shelf stored up against the back of the front seats when the rear seats were folded down.

The solid parcel shelf is the one thing that I hate about my Yeti, its begging for a roller cover, you can buy them from Ali-Express but really need the corresponding rear side trim panels made for the Asian market.

What is this current 'net' parcel shelf that you speak of? - My car is a 2015 F/L model.

In fact knowing that the boot width is pretty much identical to the Octavia MK1 & 2 (I used an Octavia variofloor) I might have a go at getting the one from my Octavia to fit and buying another to replace it.

Uhh....

I'm obviously the odd one out.  Just sold an Octavia Estate that had a roller boot cover.  Never ever used it, although I did have to completely remove it a couple of times when we wanted to fold the seats down to take stuff to the tip....

Was chuffed when I found this Karoq came with a "proper" solid cover.  Over the years I have found that hatchback type vehicles tend to be quieter inside with a solid cover for the boot area. The cover is easy enough to remove if you need to surely...?

If you have an estate and use it all the time for carrying various loads then the roller cover is far more flexible, if you dont and use the vehicle as a saloon car then I can see the attraction of the solid parcel shelf and many people use it for storing stuff on top of, having been in a roll over where the passenger recieved a Mini clutch puller set on the back of the head I would never store anything on a parcel shelf.

Easy enough to remove? - Yes but to bring something home you either have to remove it before leaving or you are screwed, in the Yeti its really an encombrance, carrying anything that requires its removal for height will prevent you from carrying it as well, the roller cover will always fit lengthwise in the tiniest of gaps.

What is the "net parcel shelf"?

Finally I find o the Yeti the solid shelf even when lifted by the tailgate shades the boot compartment from daylight and with the single candle for illumination and my eyesight I just cannot see what is in there, it also prevents me from leaning over to lift stuff out.

The illumination issue I resolved with LED linklights both sides and above the shelf on the C pillars.

Which means you can only ever carry two front seat passengers, even if you only need to lower one rear seat.

The best solution I've ever come up against for solid parcel shelves is placing them under the boot floor. That would work for most people I guess, but when you have already store stuff under there...

Have to say a roller cover is a great solution, the mesh IMO is even better in the Karoq. ( wasn't it first used by Mazda ? )  Honda came up with an interesting solution on the Civic where the roller cover sits along side the rear window and you pull the cover from one side of the car to the other. Never seen one in practice so don't know what it's like, but the advantage it's only the depth of the boot rather than the width so much smaller and lighter if you needed to store it. ( Can't really see many opportunities where you'd need to remove and store it to be honest. ).

Easy to remove yes, not easy to store if you're away from home.

It's obviously more of a problem than folk think because the number of cars I've seen with tatty and broken solid parcel shelves. Our Ateca had one and because it's a push fit on to the lugs, it was no time at all before it became loose. Push fitting plastic on to plastic which is mounted ( sometimes glued ) on to cardboard is never a great idea. :nerd:

Net Cover?

It's preferred location was to stow it on it's longest side on top of the transmission tunnel, however if one of the rear seats were still required the solid parcel shelf could be stored upright on its end in one of the rear footwells if required.

Not ideal, but doable.

The Kodiaq is neat, the retractable roller cover can be removed, as usual, but there is a dedicated space for it under the boot floor on top of the spare wheel, There are two flaps in the boot floor, one on each side that allow the full width of the aperture to be opened up to slot the roller cover in...

Defo on my Octavia estate and had assumed it was on Karoq too but that doesn't seem to be the case. Will have to double check when it's next out ( it's garaged at the mo ).

Can't see it from your pic, but isn't there also a place on Kodiaq to store the partition net if you've specified it?  I keep saying those rear most seats are bloody useless. :D

I like that mesh cover and the way itt's attached to the tailgate, I am partially sighted (surgery tomorrow may recover some) and I hate the way on the Yeti that when I lean over to get something out of the rear my head hits the edge of the parcel shelf.

I hope that's not the reason your partially sighted :D

Good luck for tomorrow. Hope it goes well.

No it was bodged and I now know totally uneccessary surgery by a private surgeon in the UK that left me not only blind but hung out to dry.

I was convinced it was a detached retina but they preferred to deny than accept responsability, returned to the ophtalmic surgeon in France as soon as I was able, my diagnosis confirmed and operated on immediately but 17 days with a totally not partially detached retina was far too long, 24 hours is the maximum.

Nonetheless she produced a miracle and tomorrow will see if there is any useable vision to be regained,.

You're having an eye operation in France? Bloody hell, that's taking a risk, look what they did to poor old King Harold.

Don't forget the NHS has been run by the French since William took over in 1066. Basic history lesson over.

My Yeti had a couple of "strings", can't think of a better word, that hooked onto small lugs on the door trim.  When you opened the hatch the shelf pivoted up.

Mine does but they raise it to the exact height to hit my forehead if I lean over from the waist to see or lift something out of the boot, there is space for it to go higher & touch the top of the door aperture but the geometry doesn't allow it.

I will have a look to see if the pick up points can be moved & the cord length altered, otherwise I will make a retaining catch.

Are you happy with the results?

That made me smile :D

For the moment dissapointed, had similar surgery in 2008 and immediately could see for the first time in 9 months, this time she said that I should see better straight away but I could see nothing, it was far worse.

On several different treatments for a week then more surgery, today its probably returned to 80% of what was there before the surgery so its a waiting game.

Fingers crossed for you.
