Dashboard Lighting

Featured Replies

Bit confused about the way the dash lighting operates.

The dash lighting on our MKII were on permanently. On the MKIII Sometimes the dash lights are on during the day, sometimes they’re not, or sometimes they go dull and then brighten-up. I thought it could be the light sensor, but then yesterday, the gray cloudy weather caused the headlights to come on but dash lights resolutely stayed off! And to confuse matters further, the dash lighting came one once the headlamps had gone off! I’ve looked in the handbook and I’ve fiddled with the instrument lighting level, which includes the dash, but it didn’t seem to make any difference.

So, any ideas people? Rather light the lighting, am I being dim and missing something?

It annoyed the crap out of me too.

Made no sense and was not helpful when u needed it.

So I changed some settings and now my dashboard stays illuminated at all times, regardless of headlights or light sensor.

Thanks!

I’d still like to know if everyone has this this issue; you know, “they all do that”!

as far as i know, a few have made comments about how the dashboard illumination behaviour is weird, mainly in low light (dawn/dusk) conditions.

the same thing with VW forums.  i found the above info from a lengthy in-depth discussion on the ross-tech forums.   there were trying to understand the link between the dashboard lights, the light sensor, and the headlight position switch.  quite scientific in fact.

but the end result was the above.

My 2015 car would dim the instrument panel when it got darkish, then put the headlights on and bring the instrument lighting back up when it got a bit darker, its 2017 replacement just puts the lights on 🙂

Weird. The system on the MKII was excellent. I’ll see if I can work out what the key is. Or not. 😊

MY15-MY16 were configured for too fast turning on xenons (not necessary in parallel with DRL),
in cloudy days xenons were on all time long 😞

after corrections in light sensor settings

that were solved, but dashboard became too dark during few hours on the morning/evening.
current tread solution not tested yet, but looks promising.
