Front Disc Size ?!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I just did my major service today in Skoda dealer for my 2016 TSI 1.4 and they told me I have to change my front and rear braking discs and pads "rear pads 80% worn and the front 75%".

They asked a total of £797 to do the work which I refused.

I tried toady to figure out the size of my discs and pads and from the option sticker in my boot I figured out the rear disc code "1KU" which is 300mm as per eurocarparts.

The question is how can I find the front disc and pad size?

Do you recommend any brand?

Many Thanks

Are you sure you need new discs? Claiming you need new discs is a common garage scam. Best to check the condition yourself. If the car passes its MOT, then your brakes are working fine. The MOT tester will probably tell you if your brake pads are getting low.

Thanks for the advice.

My MOT passed 2 months ago without any advisories.

What are the signs I should notice on the discs to know if they need to be replaced?

The car done only 38K

@knocker235

If you can not look at the front and rear pads yourself and see how worn get someone else to, and if the technician was upselling then tell the Dealer Principal that people put trust in people being honest and caring about lives, and chancers have people distrusting them.

Then name the Dealership online.

The fact that your low mileage car passed its MOT only 2 months ago with no advisories shows that there is nothing wrong with your brakes.

As a general guide, I would say you need to wear out at least two sets of brake pads before even considering replacing the discs. Unless you have completely worn out your brake pads and are getting a dreadful metal to metal grinding noise from your brakes when you apply them while driving along, then your brake discs will be wearing out slowly and gradually, not quickly.

Assessing worn brake discs is often a matter of opinion. However, mechanics who are being financially rewarded for claiming that brake discs are worn will often say they are worn when otherwise they would say that there's plenty of life left in them.

Sadly 'General guides' do not apply here. @Carlston what age of Skoda do you have and maintain?

Sadly with modern VW Group discs / Skoda discs the days of them outlasting 2,3 or 4 sets of pads are over.

The discs are what can become covered in cosmetic rust easily, then badly rusted edges, and even the braking surface on the far side delaminating.

There are plenty examples of this in this and other sections of this forum.

This is why Dealership Workshop Employees upselling is out of order because they need to be trusted and be honest.

Location location location, use and type of driving, parked on road or not in winter and various things come into play,

and if a car is on variable servicing and looked at every 2 years, and a MOT each year after 3, but not actual servicing of the brakes, maybe not even a brake fluid change means best not generalise when it is peoples safety involved.

Thanks guys for your replies, I'll book another appointment with another technican next to me so he can check pads and discs.

If I came back to my original question, How can I check my front brake discs size?

According to the three relevant diagrams on this page: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/superb/sup/2016-768/6/ the possibilities are 288mm, 312mm or 340mm.

Cut a flat piece of carboard into a U-shape with 288mm between the insides of the U, and make the legs of the U about 50mm wide. See if it fits across the diameter of the disc.  If it doesn't, open up the cutout to be 312mm, see if that fits. If it still doesn't you have the 340mm set-up.

Or just put a piece of string round the circumference, measure that and divide it by pi.

Or if you haven't got any string, you could put masking tape around the circumference of the front brake discs to measure the circumference. Then divide by Pi.

This might be easier than the cardboard method.

You can check the thickness of the front brake discs using a micrometer. autodoc.co.uk can be useful for getting the new thickness and minimum (worn) thickness of the brake discs. Maybe 25mm new and no less than 22mm worn, for example...but do check the official specifications.

According to autodoc.co.uk it appears that the Superb MK3 1.4 petrol has 312mm diameter front brake discs. These have a new thickness of 25mm, and a minimum (worn) thickness of 22mm.

I wouldn't rely on info from sites like that or ECP, they all seem to knob up quite regularly, but it's a starting point.
