Bad AC compressor?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I would like to get opinions or info from fellow members...

I have a Fabia ii, 2012, 1.2HTP. Purchased in 10/2019

The AC blows warm air or sometimes mildly cool air.  The compressor never seems to switch.  I'm not sure about the fluid; can it be checked?

I guess the compressor has failed. A relatively expensive part.

How to be sure? And is it a easy swap?

Thanks.

Your first plan should be to take that car to an auto AC specialist and they will fit their gauge set onto it and check the system performance, that should check that the fridge gas charge is correct and the compressor is pumping as required - and if not they can start working out what exactly is wrong.

Most AC/tyre/exhaust/suspension "quick fit while you wait" places will just remove the fridge gas charge and weigh it, apply a vacuum and backfill the system with the correct fridge gas weight of charge, check the air temperature at the face level vents, if okay then say it's okay now - which might just be all this system requires.

You make your choice and pay your money, sometimes you get it right and end up with a quick cheap fix, sometimes you don't.

At that age, gas is very likely but other faults could be, too. If you have the service history, check when it was last gassed. As mentioned, try getting the gas checked, as a good starting point. In the UK this will cost around £60 with many centres offering a No cooler-No cost option. If it works, you pay but if there is no change, they waive the cost of re-filling. I guess this is part based on they will more or less re-fill the gas they remove, where if it was low, they add more and you get a better system.
