Low speed vibrations

Featured Replies

So, after following some advice in another thead relating to glovebox rattle i bought some felt adhesive pads and whacked them in - glovebox rattle has gone (fingers crossed of course), fantastic.

Only problem now is, and it wasnt as obvious as before as i could only hear the glove box rattle, a rattly/vibration noise coming from somewhere in the dash (god only knows this time) when im going between 0-15mph in 1/2nd gear with low revs...

Anyone had a similar problem or will i mention it next time im at the stealers?

Im hoping i can just stick some more of my adhesive pads somewhere and its goes away :)

Im so tired...apologies for any incredibly poor grammar /spelling etc. :D

I take it nobody has had a similar problem or has it but has no fix for it then?

Damn. I really dont expect the dealer to be able to fix it.

If it's coming from the centre of the dash (behind the air vents) it's a very common problem to do with the metal bar behind the dash rubbing on it. Fixed with some silicone sealant poked through the vents or take the dash out and put it on directly :D

Thanks for your suggestion Chris, can said metal bar be seen by looking through the vent? Im a lazy bugger, and before i go all the way out the front door...:)

Vents easy to remove?

Thanks

Rightio, went out earlier and removed the central air vent/hazard warning light button bit - was amazed at how easy it was, just slipped me fingers underneath and eased it out.

Only problem i have is, i cannot see a metal bar. I see about 3! There are two metal bars going vertically, either side of the HU and air vent holes, and one (that i can hardly see or reach) going horizontally...but i have no idea what to do or where it would be rubbing?

Do you have a picture of where i should be looking to put some silicone, Chris? Help!

I took some pictures of the area i think were talking about, if you could maybe photoshop one of them and whack an arrow in to show roughly where i should be looking? :) . Pretty please!

The photos i took are attached to the thread...i took loads from different angles in hope that one of them will show this bar...

Help!!!

Couldn't find any pics and mine was done when the dash came out, but this thread has some good advice on how to do it with the dash in place :D

Chris

im glad to see im not the only one with this problem lol! the creaking has been doing my head in but i didnt have a clue how to sort it out. what part of the air vents did you get a hold of to pull it out?

To be honest i couldnt beleive how easy it was to remove the unit...i just sort of put a finger on the bottom left edge and eased it abit, then the same on the opposite edge and eased and prised it out with my fingers, then just pulled it out. Pushes back in nice and easy too. :)

woo hoo ive sorted it out no more creaking! if you look at the 3rd pic you posted in between the 2 vents behind the plastic bar thing at the front about half way into the dash there is a metal bar running length ways across the dash with 2 plastic prong type thing just above it with a gap between them:confused: i got some electricians tape and rolled some of it up and wedged it in the gap between the metal bar and the the plastic bits coming down from the dash using a long flat head screw driver its working a treat so far:D

Well done you!

Im going to go and try this now...fingers crossed, eh?

Damn and fudge. Did'nt work for me, although at least i know now that this definately is'nt where the noise is coming from. It only seems to happen in gears 1 and 2 when im between 1k and 1.5k revs...vibration from the dash...appears to be passenger side but definately is'nt the glovebox.

Also, i seem to have what sounds like a very faint crunching noise when i change gear, and when i press/release the accelerator pedal...basically whenever the car lurches slightly forward/backward i get this faint crunching noise from in front of me, god knows whether its coming from the dash or the engine bay....

Someone, please save my sanity - help?

This is very true  Although Ford seem to have mastered it in the Mondeo ;)

Chris

i was getting the creaking noise from just the car moving in general it was worse going round bends but still so far so good! are you sure that the noise is not coming from the centre of the dash what did you use to wedge in the gap?

Definately not coming from the centre, i used a felt pad wrapped in eletrical tape, wedged it right in and went for a drive with the vent part still out - listened out for the vibration and it definately isnt that area unfortunately.

Its going into the dealer on Friday for the wrinkled seats, so im going to mention the vibrations/rattle and say its not a big deal but would like it to be looked at if they know of a possible fix...

Only option i have really, other than taking the dash to bits

I've always had a really loud vibration that seems to be coming from the centre console, but it only happens when I'm doing clutch control or something and the revs are at a certain point... Then something just starts rattling / resonating.

It's very loud and very annoying, but I'm sure that if the dash came out to investigate, it'd cause more squeeks and rattles, so I live with it!

There's a dash mount about 12" back behind those pair of vents you're faced with when you remove the vent fascia/unit. If you can find a long bladed (flat) screwdriver I've found its good for wedging in a bit of rubber/foam between the plastic of the dash mount and the metal of the chassis (i guess?) - I did this on fabia mk1, and it stopped my dash rattle dead - now its started appearing in my current one, so I need to re-do my little trick.

I even found my bit of rubber in the wreck when I removed the dashboard.

same as mine..........

Chris

they need to "focus" on the newer models then, both new focus and mondeo i have used at work have been quite bad with the rattles and creaks.

I believe that it is the roads, just think how much strain and energy goes through the car goes over pot holes at 30mph and over uneven horrible jaggedy roads. something on the car has to take the pain especially on car with stiffer than normal suspension.

Maybe alot of it has to do with the poor dampening on the VRS? mamkes things rattle more as all the energy is sent into the cabin instead of being absorbed?

  • 1 month later...

:thumbup:have found the fix for this rattle. please see my new posting on the passengerside glove box rattle
