Service records

My car is approaching its 3 year service (Q 16).  It is well out of its warranty period. What are the benefits of going to a Skoda centre for the annual service?. My previous Ford was adequately serviced by a well respected local service centre. How competitive are Skoda dealers for servicing generally?

The warranty is 3 years, so do you mean 4 year service? The choice of dealer versus non- dealer is a personal one IMHO. If you are going to keep it, then a good indy who you trust is likely to be cheaper and better than a main dealer as you can have sensible conversions about what it really needs. But if you are planning to sell or trade it over the next couple of years then a full dealer history might get you a better sale price or trade in deal. The potential buyer may never have heard of your trusted indy for example.

Did you buy it from new? If so, badger the dealer to offer a 20% discount on service and spares. If not, look around for a reputable VAG specialist. They will be cheaper by a certain amount but not as cheap as a local fix-em-all.

Main dealer wants your business so price match is likely but to be honest, anytime I've called an indi such as Autohaus in Edinburgh, their quotes have only ever been a few quid cheaper - not worth it IMO. Besides if you keep to main dealer then there's always the possibility of goodwill from Skoda if something goes wrong out of warranty. As soon as you leave the club, any goodwill goes with it.

The car is just coming up to three years old so a three year warranty makes anything other than a Skoda dealer a no brainer tbh. I didn't realise that warranty ran for three years!

The car has only done 19,000 miles anyway. Thanks for the info, due to my age and lockdown I haven't got around to seeing an official Skoda dealer yet!

Have a look at the manual!

@Sandgroper

Your car is suitable for variable services and came from the factory set for that, and might still be or was maybe changed to fixed.

The Q16 you see is because you can have variable servicing as every Skoda model can since about 2011 other than the Citigo.

?

What servicing have you had so far is it fixed servicing @ 9,400 miles / 372 days or sooner?

So a Minor / Interim Service, then a Major @ 2 Years & now going to have another Minor Service before the Manufacturers Warranty Expires?

or,

Has it had only 1 service last year @ 2 years old?

I would if I knew what I was looking for.

Is it QI 6 as you wrote or Q16 as above?

Why am I asking? I dunno. I'm not at all interested as I have no idea what these `letters / numbers` mean.

Please ignore my question.

@mandp

It simply means that the manufacturer gave the engine a code that meant it can have variable / flexible / long life service intervals when the appropriate oil is used.

Service ( the third) arranged with Skoda dealer. The car is low mileage and has hardly done 800 miles since its second service, due to lockdown etc., but will, presumably  require a routine 'end of warranty' check and change of brake fluid. I am unlikely to put many miles on the clock in any event and a variable service is probably the appropriate setting tbh.

@Sandgroper

 Because the car does a low mileage going 2 years between services is not 'Simply Clever' with the MOT each year, unless you are going to be doing the regular checks and pre and post winter maintenance..

It is not just about the life of the engine oil.

Would you take the advice of your Skoda specialist then?

@Sandgroper

Who gave you the advice, was it a Service Desk Receptionists with a NVQ in Communications maybe or the Master Tech from the Workshop,

and was it to leave the car 2 years between having a professional mechanical engineer check the car because it is doing a low annual mileage?

You will be getting some Upselling advising that you are needing a AC Service, maybe a Fuel System clean and various other stuff that the Skoda Specialists regularly do advise.

Maybe scored discs and your pads 80% worn.

I use Volkservice in Blackpool, they use genuine parts / follow VAG service instruction, just their labour is about half the price of Skoda

My car is a 16 plate so it’s out of warranty

Thanks for that Drewllis, that was what I suspected. Having come to the end of warranty I will use the specialist for this one!  I will check around then for other options locally. Lockdown has hampered my mobility, being a 'vulnerable' eighty year old doesn't help either!

Best of luck finding a good one, the only thing I haven’t worked out yet is how to get a copy of all the “digital” service records... I don’t have a book or any physical copy of the cars history as Simpsons Skoda do it all electronically

Just ask them to print it out, and email it to you, or ask Skoda UK Customer Services, or any Main Dealership can pull up the service record and press 'print'.

Hi, Have you tried Myskoda app on your phone. You can get a service record direct if you can't get one from your service bloke.

Btw I have located a VAG repair shop locally, does all VAG motors and has proper access to the service record system, using genuine parts etc. Will have a look when I am released from captivity!!!!

Thanks, I’ll email them and ask for it all. I’ve got the MySkoda app but I suppose if I were to sell the car it’d be better to have it all on paper.

Glad you found a repair shop, sounds similar to Volkservice. You don’t get a coffee and a paper if you decide to wait but it’s cheeeap!
