Clutch? problems on 55000 miles - who to turn to?

Featured Replies

Hi. I bought my Ocatvia 1.4 tsi  a year ago approx, privately on Ebay for 5,800.00. Soon had a small but identifiable "clunk" changing from 1st to 2nd.

Mechanic friend said clutch problem . Tried to book into Skoda dealer (Marshalls in Croydon) but fully booked for the next month plus, and, as I needed the car to go away, booked into a private garage (Automatix in Rochester).

Collected car - after new clutch and mechatronic unit fitted for 1,800.00. and problem continued. Eventually took it back and had 2nd new clutch fitted.

Problem continued. Took to Marshalls who identified new software to download. Did that and problem continues now. and is getting worse

To book into Marshalls again they want 125.00 to investigate the problem, and I am sure they are just going to plug in their diagnostic equipment and run the same tests as before which showed no fault.

When should I stop spending money on this car? Does anyone think I have a case against the company who fitted the clutch? against Skoda? Only on 55,000 miles now with full service history.

Any ideas what to do next?

55000 might seem low for a clutch needing replaced but you have no idea how the owners before you drove the car. Take the car back to the garage who carried out the repair and speak to them, did you tell them it was the clutch or did they diagnose a faulty clutch?. You have no case against Skoda for a clutch, mileage means nothing when It comes to clutches  and going by the price of the car, it’s out of warranty. There’s a good video on YouTube, from a guy called Diagnose Dan, who strips down a polo dsg gear box with the 1.4. The fault might be the gear actuator, I’m sure there is a specific way you have to re-set them.

Thanks meta for your reply and suggestions. Well, took it to Marshalls who indeed diagnosed clutch / flywheel - need to investigate, so returned to Auto specialist in Kent who had fitted the previous 2 clutches, (still under warranty) and they fitted a 3rd new clutch. Problem seems slightly improved but not totally so don't know where to go now. They said, if the problem persists, it can't be the clutch any longer. They actually stripped the clutch out of the car while I was there and I could see the flywheel and clutch and there were no visible signs of wear / dust / oil / etc to indicate why not functioning properly.

Nobody  has ever suggested it could be the gear actuator, before. I will watch the video and see what it is.

The problem isn't easy to diagnose or even spot being intermittent, but it's still annoying every time I drive.

That's a lot of money to pay, so everything is paid by warranty?

Thanks for your post. Just to be clear, the car is a 2012 model TSI and I bought it privately so there was no warranty on the car. I paid 1800.00 for the clutch and mechatronic unit to be replaced and since then, the clutch has been replaced twice under waranty by the people who fitted it.

@Teacherspet

Is this a DQ200 DSG you are asking about since you are saying a replacement MCU and Software updates?

What age is the car?

Thanks for your question. Not sure about that. Its a 2012 TSI Auto with a DSG clutch 7 speed. And the people who replaced the clutch also replaced the mechatronic unit at the same time. The flywheel was judged by them to be in good condition so they didn't do that.

@Teacherspet

So the engine is clear enough.   Is it a 7 speed DSG?

?

Was it part of the Service Campaign '34F7' and had the Oil Changed from Synthetic to Mineral and a software Update sometime since early 2014?

Sticker in the spare tyre well.

EDIT,

OK got your post after i posted.

So they should guarantee their work, and they might well be hopeless.

Even one of Scotlands biggest Dealership groups can have Techs that are crap.

 This DQ200 DSG is the same as yours even though in a Fabia vRS.  If late 2012 from the factory it never got 34F7 or Service Campaign 34H5 carried out.

£2,800 paid at a Skoda Main Dealership for a New Mechatronic Control Unit and Clutch Pack & they farmed the work out.

(They even tried to charge for the first MCU they ruined because the Tech was clueless.)
