air filter change

Featured Replies

its been three years now and i will be changing the air filter again

its one of those trapezoidal shaped ones about 40mm thick with a red rubber seal around the edge...'58 plate 1.4 Tdi

i bought a low priced one then and wonder if the more expensive ones are worth paying for regarding fuel economy and a measure of performance on accellerating

i have seen the cotton and wire cleanables on tv...wheeler dealers... which they advocated as they have a longer life being cleanable...

any input here gratefully received...

ps....do we get to go for an MOT soon....mine was in May and no letter...i know its because of Covid-19 etc...

cheers for now

geof

The car will be happy as Larry with a new clean paper filter if you are not going offroad or wading.

many thanks...i did feel i was perhaps getting sucked into the techy side a bit...and the price differentials are quite a lot...

i guess any paper filter will do which is advised for my skoda...

i think it was a Bosch one although i guess the labels dont mean much on the generic ones...even so there seems to be a bit of a variation in prices and some dont look like the shape of mine...

getting ready to do the 1M unlock day?

i watch the scottish news summaries every day on BBC red button

very interesting...

cheers

From stuff I've read and experienced, the low cost of a paper filter, from the usual (CP4L?ECP), etc, for under a tenner, changed regularly, will be better then forking out fifty-odd bear tokens for one that MAY just give an extra 2bhp, and need a professional cleaning every 50,000 miles, including cleaning fluid and then re-oiling, with special fluid. Over oil and you may send crap into the maf sensor etc so maybe not a good idea to the lazy owner.

Just change the cheap paper one as often as possible, rather then every 40,000 miles or whatever the book says. A clean filter is like clean oil. Go up to the interval, fine- go over it, stupid. Change prior to needing to, cost a bit more but worth it if you can!

Thanks old chap

just what makes sense here not technology for my old girl but ££ sense....and i am changing because i thought 4 years/40k was a lot

i only do around 5k a year and the filter was looking grubby and there was a tired old leaf in the bottom of the chamber

will get over to opie oils and get one of the ones they sell...

thanks again

cheers

geof

Hi Geof, did not realise that was you! Did you ever get to the bottom of the fan running incident? I was just mentioning the fault on a different Skoda model here.

I usually fit Bosch ones myself, as with oil, fuel and cabin filters. Just a preference. Cheap enough and delivered from carparts4less, with a code.

A new cheap filter every year is better than a pricey one every two. As long as maintenance is kept regular enough you can get away with the cheaper stuff.

Re Washable / Treatable Performance filters.

If a replaceable paper filter is dirty enough at 10,000 or 20,000 or 30,000 miles to need replaced then the 'Performance filter' would also  be dirty enough to be reducing performance and wasting fuel as well, maybe even sooner than the paper filter.

So cleaning or cleaning and treating required.

it was diagnosed as a fan contoller open earth/wiring fault

i got it fixed at my home by a mobile engineer for £125

I'm just south of the border with northern ireland about an hour from Dublin and an hour from Belfast.

...I was meant to be coming to Dublin this autumn with my granddaughter, for her karate competition but due to the Covid business, classes/training and competitions have been put on hold! Big shame as we were expecting to bring home a medal/trophy or two!

Never been there before, been to Hayle (Cornwall)  many times and love the place.

I believe you can/could go and get an MOT now, and always could at any garage that was open and offering MOT testing.  You don't need to get one before October 3rd though if your current one expired after 29th March. https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot.

MOT test stations are likely to be acutely busy around the beginning of October so may be wise to book it in sooner.

Edited by Wino

Following from Wino, you can go to the gov MOT check site and pop your own reg no. in and it will tell you when your vehicle is due its next MOT. (Mine says Oct,2nd, despite the current one running out in April). I just checked my other car, which runs out 2nd July, and at present, the site still says its due then so I am unsure as to if they will still extend MOT's or if it will only be for the ones already expired from march till May, etc. Well worth checking, to be sure as I think this thing may well catch a few people out and no MOT is now a £1000 fine AND penalty points on the licence.

Back in the day, it used to be a punitive £10 fine, no points... It was cheaper to get caught, then to undertake the test!

That check will put your mind at ease, one way or the other. The link is below, if it works ok.

@mrgf, read what it says about MOT extensions in your link.

From what I've read on car forums, people are either not reading what has been written about this on official pages, or are trying to be clever and move their MOT date on a bit, I've never ever been in doubt that what has been extended is the "must be MOT'd by" date.

I'll be attempting to get my wife's 2015 VW Polo MOT as soon as possible, ie just within the month before it is due, although in its case I would not be expecting any extension to the "must be MOT'd by" date.

Be wary if you MOT your car close to the required expiry date.

If the 6 month extension has been applied the mot ( if you pass ) will only be valid for 365 days.

Mine ran out on 3 June 2020 and I had the MOT done on 2 June 2020.

I now have a car that has TWO current MOT's.

One that expires on 2 Dec 2020, the six month extension.

One that expires on 1 June 2021, 365 days from when the test was done.

But it was not extended to 3 June 2021 as it would have done last year.

All a bit weird but yeah, they will add a month  all but a day to an MOT if you do it a day  under a month before it expires but then the date changes, if you do it too soon!

As for what Wino said, I either missed or they adde the info about it being a kind of rolling date to have the MOT extended.

I did try to do mine a few days prior to lockdown, whilst I still had a bit left but my garage were not undertaking them and gave me the heads-up about the extension. It was not then quite official but they told me HGV vehicles had already had an extension and other vehicles were almost certainly going to be included. The funny thing was, my original MOT was due November but someone hit my door, denting it and breaking the mirror. This was enough for the insurance of the third party to say the car was a write-off and paid me accordingly. A different door, mirror and paint later and all back to normal although my insurance asked for an MOT, and a receipt copy,  in order to ensure the work was done fairly.

(I got the MOT, the door, mirror, etc, along with my bonnet painted due to small dent and wheels refurbed, still for half the insurance pay out)!

Oh, Geof, it may well be worth changing the cabin filter, too unless done recently. They get surprisingly grubby.

oil was done in november

the fuel filter is now 3 years old....think it also needs a change...it says 4 years or 40k..i have done 3 years and 18k

might be something to do...😏... i've cut the grass and waxed the car...so?

just bought the fuel filter any way...three's for luck

there is a massive sale going on at euro parts

they have a click and collect near me...8miles in penzance

...I think your engine is very similar to mine. If so, the fuel filter is quite a simple swap, with a small amount of mess and no need to bleed the diesel system at all.

yes.. i was under the assumption that if the new filter wasnt primed then an air lock might occur and affect the injectors....?

i went ahead and with some fresh diesel primed the new filter with about as much as i could coax in with my little jug and fitted it with no issues....

can say priming was easy and a bit of a chore...would be glad not to do it...i didnt three years ago when i first got the car...no problems then...

so

here are my machinations to do the job which is really a lot easier than doing the cabin filter which didnt fit the frame to well and i had to trim off 1/2 a "V" of one of the ends

point in case here....the filter has air this way printed on it....and i guess i put it into the frame correctly...pointing left to right as if the air came in from the door end...if not i will have to take it out and check again....you know its the most fussy of fittings i have seen...upside down and in the semi darkness

also i was considering the carbon filter after buying the paper one but see that carbon filters arent good for pollen...??...does that sound right

the one i took out was a thick grey material...i put it in initially...would that have been a carbon filter..??!!

some debate over a piece of paper and some dust eh??

i used pencils to fuel lines to and from the filter thinking diesel might pour out...another miss apprehension i guess

all done anyway

cheers

geof

I replaced the paper filter on my Alfa 146 with a K & N one. Didn't notice any difference in performance and in a couple of weeks the air mass sensor needed replacing. Coincidence? or does the oil on the K & N damage the sensor? I would stick to a paper filter.
