My wife was driving home today. She tried putting the fabia into 3rd and it just rev like it's in neutral.  It also struggles to go onto 1st and reverse. The gear stick wont stay in the selected gear position. 

 

Am I right in thinking this i the gear linkage?

 

Is it going to be expensive to sort?

 

It's a 2004 fabia vrs diesel.  192k miles

Probably a control cable detached at a ball joint, you should be able to manually select all the gears from under the bonnet by manipulating  the big aluminium counterweight on the external linkage.

Thanks for the reply. The counter weight was loose. I tightened it up now everything is working as it should
