Monte Carlo Timing Belt + Service Intervals

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 66 plate Monte Carlo with 37k miles - does anyone know when the cam belt is due and also what kind of service it may be due next as my rear brakes are sticking after raining so it may be due the rear brakes stripping also?

cheers,

Carl

Cam belt is replace at 5 years according to UK dealers, whilst abroad its simply "check". Brakes are supposed to be checked as part of every 2nd service, whether they actually bother to do so is anyones guess.

The Citigo cambelt is kevlar reinforced and the timing gears are tri-oval in shape.

As a result of these design specifications, the manufacturer (VW) recommends an inspection at 160k miles and replace if necessary.  There is no specified time limit.

Skoda UK suggest replacement at 5 years irrespective of mileage.

So does this make them virtually undestructable?

No. They gradually age irrespective of mileage. They obviously also age and usage-wear faster if they get driven in conditions where you pick up lots of road dirt, grit, dust, salt, oil-waste, tar spatter etc etc. That will vary around the country.

Whatever the completely conflicting advice is out there I'll consider a change at 5 years pending inspections, or 50-60K miles anyway.

VW think so, their recommendation is to check at 160k miles and replace if necessary.

I haven't heard of any cambelt failures on this engine.

My 2016 Colours model is approaching 60k miles. So I've got another 100k to go before I check, which is around early 2027.
