How to remove rusted wheel arch liners screws?

Featured Replies

It looks like these T25 screws are so rusted the socket bit won't work, do you have any ideas how to take them off without ruining the liner and if you can get them off where to get a new set?

It's worth giving them a blast of WD40 (or whatever release spray you like) the day before. You can get to the back (thread) of a lot of the screws if you've got a can with a straw on.

I normally tap the screwdriver bit in with a little hammer, and most of the time that helps them it break through the rust and get seated right. If you've got an impact driver, that will almost always get them out as long as the bit is seated right - just don't use it to put them back in afterwards!

Worst case, you can normally get a flatblade screwdriver to bite in a couple of the lobes on the screw head, or bite down on them with some mini mole grips.

You can get replacement screws on ebay, it's worth changing the speed fasteners as well. If you can get stainless steel ones, that will help the job next time. I normally give them a good coating of copper grease as well.

Who's have thought a liner would be one of the toughest most annoying parts to remove.

You can probably start them moving with a hammer and punch applied in the appropriate angle/rotation to the outer area of the wide flange part. Access to do this may be difficult for some of them though.

I tend to buy them from this fella: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-25x-Wheel-Arch-Undertray-Interior-Exterior-M5x16-Screws-N90974701/174236468474?hash=item28914d84fa:g:4BgAAOSwYY1egziQ

Most of them go into plastic inserts one or two into spire fasteners which have no resistance, it sounds like the scew heads have corroded, I would use a L/H flute 6mm or larger drill bit in a battery drill to back them out.

Thanks.

My plan is to clean and remove rust.

If I use a wire brush drill attachment to get rid of the rust whats my next step. I have a can of waxoyl underseal do I need to do anything before I put this on, an undercoat or just wash the surface again?

Can I derust and paint anything, like the tracking arms, struts etc?

With rust removed, and dirt then 'Rust Inhibitor' would be the next thing before any undercoat and top coat or waxoyl or anything.

What would you use as an undercoat as I assume waxoyl would be the final coat, and if the rust is removed do you really need a rust inhibitor?

You should be able to get a bite on the head with good pliers/large side cutters and get the screw turning.
